"Negress" sounds like a Far-Right parody. I can't believe people actually used to talk like that.

This is merely a function of your education and age. But, let me ask you a question: how is your ignorance a just cause for you to denigrate (put down) other folks?

Really, what I am doing wrong? Why is everyone suddenly takings my posts too seriously?

Yes, this could be somehow linked to my age and education but in the sense that no one with a academic degree would talk like that. At least not since something like 1800's. Probably everyone in their right mind would find that kind of talk both terribly old-fashioned and terribly offending.

Maybe you need more smilies

anyhow...you are about a century or so off on when the term was still in use in the US

I think the point is rather that there is nothing intrinsically offensive in the term "negress". It is only offensive because society has decided that it's offensive, but that can change. These days blacks consider "negro" offensive, but civil rights leaders freely used the word to describe blacks in the 1960s. So it simply betrays the prejudice of your age to act amazed that anyone ever used the term. While it may be associated with the far right today, it was not associated with the right only a few decades ago.

I'm not an American. I don't smile all the time.  :P

I've never really learnt to use smilies properly. I was annoying wannabe-adult as a teenager and didn't want to use smileys in order to appear older than I was. I failed miserably but I still use smileys fairly little.
I just need to find out how to say it in Slavonic!

Here is an example of when one should use a smiley.

You: I was annoying wannabe-adult as a teenager...
Me: Do you mean that you are no longer a teenager? :)

another helpful thing to note:

You do not actually have to smile in real life, in order to use a smiley.

So it is irrelevant whether you smile in person, a lot, a little, never, or any variation in between.

I -think- his point is (and I admit i could be totally wrong......)

'People should marry whoever the heck they want, without having rules or guidelines about who you can and cannot marry, and so forth.....why is the pesky church interfering in people's private lives.

If the OP wants to marry a jew, he should, without any thought to the future.'

That about right ?

Except for the "without any thought to the future" and the flippant phrasing, that's pretty much it.

If two people are truly in love but let differences of religion come between them, they are very likely to have major regrets down the road.  It's certainly not a bad thing for a husband and wife to share the same religious beliefs, but it's not essential to a good marriage.

You haven't answered the question on how the Orthodox church puts unnecessary burdens on people by telling them whom they can't marry.

A religious organization telling its members that they shouldn't marry someone outside of that body is inherently burdensome.  Not all religions do that, fortunately.

May I respectfully reply "hogwash"?

Not respectfully.

Importing a bride you barely know from a foreign country you barely know is insane. I am astonished that some people here think this is remotely a good idea.

So does the idea of committing 100% to only one person to the rest of your life both spiritually, sexually, emotionally, and economically, and yet people attempt to do this often. Needless to say, I don't think you're looking at this through the lens of some people (like myself included). Jonny boy, you're from a by-gone generation where not only was toilet paper leaves and bell-bottoms a good idea, but where you could easily get married at 16-18 right after High School, divorce was considered a taboo, unspeakable thing, and the wide accessibility to pornography via the internet didn't arouse your passions. Now, for younger people like William and I, it ain't quite the same. We're expected to go to college for at least 4 years after High-School, be in debt, and all-the-while have our passions enflamed by the easy access to internet pornography. And the women have higher expectations too. They want houses and money; they want the dream life, and many of them don't want to put in any effort on their part. This is why it's common for people to delay marriage until their mid 30s nowadays. Simply put, I can't speak for all women, but many women just aren't worth it any more, and many men simply can't do it. Add the fact that many men like William and I are notoriously shy, low-confident, and dealing with hung-ups about women due to personal issues, and you can kind of get a glimpse why some men may entertain the thought of acquiring a women from a strange, foreign land. It's human nature to, when in misery, to imagine that anything foreign or different is better.

So it's just about "exotic" or "foreign", and has nothing to do with having someone just a bit more insecure and vulnerable than yourselves so that you can feel in control of something like the men you wish you were.  Got it.

Do you have any sense of compassion at all, Mor? You are consistently one of the cruelest posters on this forum. James wasn't even trying to defend the importing of a bride, he was explaining why it would be tempting for him while acknowledging that this is only because of his own shortcomings. As always, he publicly revealed far, far too much about himself, expressed some pretty weird opinions, and unfortunately involved me for some reason, but that is really no reason to question his masculinity for the great crime of having been subjected to physical and verbal abuse. You owe him an apology, for this and your constant harassment of him, which he never answers in the same petty and personal manner.
Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

Sorry, James, I see where you're coming from. Sure, every commitment to marriage is a life-long commitment and it involves risk. However well you know someone, you don't know 100% if they'll always have your back, or if you'll always have theirs. But at least you should spend some time getting to know them deeply before you commit, and I can't see how that is feasible when you just order your brides by mail.

I was thinking of some account I read here, I think, where a Syrian immigrant man basically ordered a bride from the old country. It worked out fine, but I imagine it's because they had the same cultural background. It would be tougher when you're not Russian or Bulgarian or whatever. Being Orthodox would certainly help, though.

Also, I'm only 32. I have no direct memories of the older way of things.

How is an imported bride supposed to alleviate any of that?

Oh dear Hawkeye.

Their new bride will be so darn grateful to them for lifting her out of the pit she came from.
Her gratitude will mean a lifetime of hot meals, no conversations and hot married sex.

At least until they wake up from their dream and said wife still wants them to take the trash out and relate to them.
