Investigating Orthodox Christianity
« on: February 25, 2014, 12:48:35 AM »
hello brothers and sisters.

i am a non-denominational Christian in America. i am in a protestant seminary now, and find God introducing me to the Orthodox faith. i am drawn to it, but also question a lot of practices.

my prayer is for God to guide my path, to keep me firmly in His hand and to lead me into all truth, no matter what.

i would greatly appreciate your prayers as i embark on this inquiry.

thank you, and God bless you all.

thank you, i've made arrangements to, as well as to discuss with a priest. my seminary is also aligned with an Orthodox seminary and I may try to take some classes there.

Sounds good.

There have been several protestant seminarians who started taking courses at Orthodox seminaries and who decided to stay.

^Good one!

Welcome to the forum,  nicodemus144...and to Orthodoxy.

Feel free to ask any questions here....however, keep in mind that we have many different personalities on this site.  Some will be informative, warm and kind, and others not so much.  Please never confuse the faithful with the Faith.  :)  Just a some friendly advice.

I know you will find Orthodoxy to be what you are searching for.  There are no stumbling blocks, only things that not quite understood.  I hope you find the answers to help you understand them.

Once again, welcome to the Forum, and I hope and pray to Orthodoxy, as well!
Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.

Welcome Nicodemus!

I pray God Almighty you will find the same Richness and "welcome home" as I found 2 years ago.

And remember what has been said in Matthew 7

Quote
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ
Psalm 57:2 I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me.

i would like to add a special note to this prayer request.

i am happily married, and i thank God for that. but now my wife is becoming very uneasy and uncomfortable with my critiques of protestantism and my inquiry into Orthodoxy. it aches me, but i'm trying to patient and gentle with her as the Lord is with me.

i don't really know what to pray in that regard, but the Spirit does.

thank you all again.

nicodemus144, I really don't know that much but some things I am sure of.
For example, God doesn't do half work, when you seek He will make it so you will find, when you ask He will provide and marriage is and institution God Himself created.

You are married, seeking, and asking... so (and this is even more sure as math is) God will make it so you find and He will provide. And since God doesn't do half work, He won't forget your wife.

God won't, and I can't stress this enough, He won't do half work, ever.

Keep your trust in God, ask God to guide you in what to say.

I will keep you in my prayers.

lots and lots of patience is the key.
i never realised it, but you gain very many virtues while being very loving and patient and open and allowing those closest to you to see (and criticize) the values dearest to your heart, as your spiritual journey leads you deeper into God's love.
the spiritual growth that can be achieved is very valuable.
being loving, forgiving and humble is as important as fasting and praying.
may God guide you (us!) all.

thank you all for your prayers and support. while this inquiry is emotionally straining on my wife, we have not fought over it, thank God.

we have gotten to the point in our dialogue where she is willing for me to become Orthodox should i so chose, and that she may "catch up" with me later in her journey. she doesn't want me to wait for her as she doesn't know if it will ever happen.

that is at least something for me, that i could move forward in peace without feeling like i am forcing her to go, or she forcing me to stay. perhaps in this way we can let God move in our lives in His time, and should i become orthodox, perhaps it will be a witness to her to see that i haven't lost the Holy Spirit, but rather have been enriched in my walk. truth be told, my walk is already stronger just by being near orthodoxy, incorporating the hour prayers, speaking with a priest and studying the Orthodox Bible. it is hard to describe how, but it is somehow richer than my experiences learning in the Protestant world. somehow deeper, smoother, more elegant, refined, wise, graceful, loving, higher. i can't really pin it down with words.

anyway, sorry for rambling. i am enjoying my inquiry and it seems God is changing my heart in ways i did not expect.

may He continue to lead my wife and i into all truth and protect us from deception.

thank you all again.

I've requested to become a catechumen at my nearest OCA church. I would like for the priest to further guide my instruction and inquiry.

May the Lord mercifully keep me and lead me into all truth.

thank you all for your prayers.

my priest and i have decided that it is not yet time for me to become a catechumen. we'd both prefer to continue to work out some things first. for him, to enter the catechumenate is like becoming engaged. i am ok with this.

i've picked up some books to read by Fr. Gillquist and Met. Kallistos, as well as one on TULIP from an Orthodox view.

i am also probably going to pull away from this forum for at least some time. the healing that must occur from here can only be done in the Church and with my priest, and the forum is becoming more harmful to me than good.

please continue to pray for me as there are many strong feelings trying to sway me away from this path.

thank you all again. be well.

I don't know if you will see this since you planned not to be on the forum. Your posts especially made an impression on me because I am also struggling with the idea of my husband not approving. The answers others give you are encouraging.

My prayers will be with you, for your journey and illumination, as well as for peace between you and your wife and for The Lord to guide you both.

am doing badly and going on the forum again!
oh, well, i'll try to cut down in Holy Week.

by the way i am a lady and so my 'wife' is a husband.
 ;)

i have an icon picture of saint matthias because he is lovely, maybe it would have been easier if i had chosen a female saint, but i used an icon from the website as i haven't quite figured out how to post pictures.
i suspect it involves giving personal data such as computer name and extra 'cookies'.

may God bless u this coming Holy Week.
read the psalms about the messiah, and isaiah (at least chapters 45 - 63) and the last parts of all the gospels.

here is a beautiful prayer to Jesus:

(about His suffering for us)
and chanted in arabic here:

thank you for your continued prayers. :) we can definitely still use them, and they have been effective.

my wife and i have come a long way over these months. reading, studying, praying, seeking counsel. we meet with our priest every Saturday before Great Vespers to ask questions. it's rather miraculous but she's coming around in her own way and time. God is good.

we will begin attending an Orthodox church exclusively starting in July and hope to become catechumens together before the summer is out, Lord willing.

please keep us in prayer. many people are watching this process occur in our lives.

Thanks again.

Just a quick update. Tonight, for the first time, my wife said that becoming Orthodox is no longer just something her husband wants. It's now something she wants and believes in.

Praise the Lord. What a miracle. He is good, answers prayers, and changes hearts.

Experienced my first Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas today! It was wonderful, reverent, lovely, bright, and full of love. I have never been so wrapped in the love and peace of God. The community was also very welcoming. Sarah and I greatly benefited from the experience.

I went to my second Divine Liturgy yesterday, unlike the first time I was able to follow the services more closely.

It wasn't a negative experience, I felt fine after going there.

Though I was really tired afterward, I had to clean the house and walk the dog afterward.
Not everything I type or have typed in the past is reflective of the teaching of the Orthodox Church, or may not reflect my contemporary views on a subject. (5/30/2015)

If you could follow well at your second visit, you are doing better than I was. ;)

I had a tendency to get lost a lot. But it still didn't take long at all for me to learn. And now I understand enough bits of the Greek even that I have some ideas what is going on even if I didn't have context or text. Having the same pattern every week makes it easy to learn. :)

Sorry you ended up tired. I guess I did at first too, but now I'm so endergized by it that I feel almost like I've missed something on a "short day". :). I hope it will become like that for you too - if you are already following along that's probably a good sign. :)

Ah, ok. I'm glad to hear that. ;)

I know several languages (varying levels of fluency) and the Greek is still taking time. Arabic I would be totally lost in. But if it works for you, that's awesome! :)

Then again, I'd be ok with total Greek at this point (except the readings), though I'd still like a translation for Orthros. :)

I'm really tired after every DL. I go home, eat a bit and take a nap.  It is a good tired though, like I've actually accomplished something beneficial.

Hello everyone. I want to thank you all again for your love, patience, care and prayer. You have helped me and my wife on our journey.

I'm happy to inform you all that today my wife and I declared to our priest our desire and intention to become catechumens and unite with the Orthodox Church. He has accepted us with joy. The official prayer before the congregation will be in three weeks when he returns from his vacation. I just couldn't wait to inform you all as this is all a miraculous answer to prayer.

The Lord moves, thanks be to God.  :D

hello everyone! it has been some time since my last post.

my wife and i have completed our catechesis over the course of ~7 months. we've been attending regularly and getting involved in the choir and getting to know everyone in our parish family. it's been a wonderful experience.

my wife loves Orthodoxy. she and i both agree that we could never be anywhere else after coming to Orthodoxy. where else could we go?

coming to Orthodoxy is so good and yet so hard to explain how and why it's truly different. it's not like just going to a new church, or switching denominations. it is fundamentally, ontologically different. God is present here in a way that is unique to Orthodoxy. He is everywhere, of course, and was with us when we were protestants, but this is so much more. there are, of course, all the usual things: the Liturgy, the Fathers, the Tradition, the Beauty, the consistent theology that can be tracked, unbroken, through the ages. and all these things among others are amazing, and still, the real truth is that there is something More present here, and that More is what imbues Life into all these other things. and i think that More is Jesus, is God.

i am ecstatic and humbled, weak in the knees and tearful with awe. this is the Church. i've looked for so long, waited for so long, and we're finally coming Home.

my first Confession is tomorrow, in preparation for our reception by Chrismation on Pentecost.

this part of our journey, our inquiry, is ending, but it is only the beginning, the entryway into our eternal journey of theosis.

thank you all for your prayers. please continue to pray for us through Pentecost, and many blessings to you all!

Hi Everyone!

Today was the day! On this day we celebrated Pentecost and Sarah and I were Chrismated, being united to the Orthodox Christian Church. The image gallery is linked below, with pictures first in black and white and then in color. Pictures were graciously taken by Eliot Prisby, of Iris Leaf Photography. Please give credit if you do any reposting.

Thank you all for taking this journey with us and for all your support. While this marks the end of one leg of our journey, a whole new chapter has begun in our lives, and we can't wait to see what amazing things God has in store for us next!

Many blessings to you all, and much love in Christ!
