Four new Bishops - Mar Gregorios, Mar Theophilos, Mar Dionysius and Mar Chrysostomos were ordained on March 05 by Catholicos H.H. Mar Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews 11 along with Catholicos designee H.B. Mar Thimothoes and metropolitans of the Holy Synod. The new bishops were elected in the Malankara Association of June 2004 and confirmed by the Holy Synod in July 2004.

I see that the IOC has a Catholicos designee. Does any of the other oriental orthodox churches (Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopian, Syriac, Eritrian) have a Patriarch designee or Catholicose designee ? Or do you all elect a Patriarch or Catholicose only after the post becomes vacant ?

In the Armenian Church there is Catholicos Locum Tenens, who is interim head of the Church. I am not sure if this position is same as Catholicos-designee in the Indian Church. I think the Catholicos-designee is selected in the Malankara Association meeting.  Due to old age of present Catholicos of the East  H.H. Mar Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews 11, the Catholicos-designee (H.B. Mar Thimotheos)  assumed the administrative duties of the Church when H.H. is not available.
