Official delegation of Serbian Orthodox Church to visit USA and discuss
situation in Kosovo

The Serbian Orthodox Church wishes to confirm during its visit the readiness
of the Church to offer its constructive contribution to the process of
ethnic and interfaith reconciliation, tolerance and enhancement of social
conditions in the life of all citizens. In and of itself the Church is not
in a position to make decisions regarding important political issues;
however, by its role in the preservation of spiritual and cultural
traditions, pastoral work and moral authority, the Serbian Orthodox Church
is a factor in the resolution of existing problems in the region of the
former Yugoslavia, especially in Kosovo, that cannot be ignored

On Friday 25th an official delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church will be
traveling to the United States of America. The delegation was appointed by
the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, with His Holiness
Serbian Patriarch Pavle presiding, according to decision no. 123 of the Holy
Synod of Bishops dated January 28, 2005. The members of the delegation
include:

- His Grace Bishop Grigorije of Zahumlje and Herzegovina - member of the
Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Holy Assembly
of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church's Council for Kosovo;
- His Grace Bishop Teodosije of Lipljan - abbot of Visoki Decani Monastery,
vicar to the Bishop of Raska and Prizren and member of the Holy Assembly of
Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church's Council for Kosovo;
- Hieromonk Irinej Dobrijevic - consultant to the Holy Synod of Bishops for
international and inter-church affairs and member of the Holy Assembly of
Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church's Council for Kosovo;
- Dr. Bogoljub Sijakovic - prodeacon for sciences of the Orthodox
Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade; and
- Andrej Veric - director of the Serbian Unity Congress Washington office,
local consultant (who will join the delegation in the United States)

During the course of their stay of several days in the USA, the high
delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church is expected to meet with United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York (March 28), as well as with
senior officials of the State Department and US Congress in Washington. The
delegation is expecting confirmation with regard to a meeting with US
President George W. Bush, Jr. and other important contacts in the US
capital. In addition to meeting with international officials, the Serbian
Orthodox Church delegation will also meet with representatives of the
Serbian Diaspora and representatives of Orthodox communities in the United
States.

Prior to the departure of the SPC delegation, on Thursday, March 24, a
session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church will be
held with His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Pavle presiding, where the official
position to be represented in public by the members of the delegation is to
be defined.

The primary purpose of the visit by the church delegation is to inform US
and UN officials with the situation in which the Serbian Orthodox Church and
its faithful are living on the territory of Kosovo Province, and to ask the
US and the international community for firmer guarantees for respecting
basic human and religious rights, as well as more effective protection of
Orthodox Christian holy shrines, which have been exposed to systematic
destruction for more than five years.

At a time just before the beginning of announced talks on the Kosovo
status, the ten year anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Agreement for
Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the gradual approach of the state union of
Serbia-Montenegro to Euro-Atlantic institutions, the Church is seriously and
responsibly considering the long term conditions necessary for the survival
of its faithful and holy shrines on territory where it has existed and
witnessed its faith in Our Lord Christ for many centuries.

The Church is especially concerned by the painful issue of the return of
more than 200,000 Kosovo Serb refugees, who should be enabled to return to
their homes and holy shrines. Serbs and other non-Albanians who live in
Kosovo and Metohija, as well as those who wish to return, should be provided
with long term survival, security, employment and protection of cultural
identity and heritage through an appropriate decentralization model. The
comprehensive rebuilding of destroyed churches, monasteries, cemeteries,
homes and schools is of crucial importance for the establishment of normal
life, and unhindered pastoral and missionary activity on the part of the
Church, regardless of final political solutions, which can be achieved only
through dialogue and respect for international law, not by the use of force.
The inalienable right of the Church to the restitution of its property
confiscated during the Communist period, as well as the protection of the
right to private property of every citizen, which is the basis of democratic
society, is an especially important concern.

The Serbian Orthodox Church wishes to confirm during its visit the readiness
of the Church to offer its constructive contribution to the process of
ethnic and interfaith reconciliation, tolerance and enhancement of social
conditions in the life of all citizens. In and of itself the Church is not
in a position to make decisions regarding important political issues;
however, by its role in the preservation of spiritual and cultural
traditions, pastoral work and moral authority, the Serbian Orthodox Church
is a factor in the resolution of existing problems in the region of the
former Yugoslavia, especially in Kosovo, that cannot be ignored.

The ERP KIM Info-Service will be providing regular updates during the course
of the upcoming visit of the Serbian Orthodox Church delegation to the
United States of America.

Oh Lord, Save thy people and bless thine inheritance.
Grant victory to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries.
And by virtue of thy Cross preserve thy habitation.
