St. Augustine of Hippo pray for me!

« on: January 05, 2014, 09:44:21 PM »

So my dad's uncle--perhaps the only rational, normal person in my family--unfortunately has a cancerous tumor that needs to be removed via surgery tonight. His health is horrible, as he is an elderly alcoholic and has received a blood transfusion not too long ago, so there is a huge chance he could die. Some prayers that he will survive and get through this would be nice.

It may also be worthy to mention that he is actually Greek Orthodox, having converted something like 50 years ago, to the dismay of his RC family. AFAIK, he is the only Orthodox person in the family other than myself and perhaps the one person in my family I relate to most. He also acquired a PhD from UC Berkeley back at a time when most Mexicans couldn't even dream of doing such a thing, so he's a huge inspiration to me and I'd be very sad to see him die.

No I don't know what parish he goes to. I think his RC sister called him though.

Find out. It would really be sad if he were denied the Holy Mysteries because everyone else thought that his RC sister has already called when perhaps she has not.

Semi good news.

He had to get a biopsy to see if the tumor can be operated on or not. He is currently at his home being taken care of by his sister until he receives the results from his biopsy. He may or may not go into surgery depending on the results.

Second Update:

The results from the biopsy came in. It turns out that he will in fact be getting surgery. He has to have his entire stomach removed. Yikes! That sounds horrifying. He will be having the surgery done in Sacramento.

Another unfortunate update:

The cancer is now stage 4, spreading to other organs and may die in just a couple of months. He will be beginning chemo and other conventional treatments very soon.

St. Augustine of Hippo pray for me!

« Reply #40 on: February 05, 2014, 07:29:34 PM »

I visited him with my grandparents (his sister and brother-in-law) a couple days ago at his house for the first time in 8 years.

Without going into too much detail, I'm requesting even more prayers for him...

Not necessarily his physical health, as that's a lost cause--he's going to die within a few months--but more so for his spiritual and emotional health right now.

He's a wreck. I feel a great deal of sorrow for him. He is very bitter inside and miserable, I could tell that he's harboring a deep, existential grief and loneliness. His house is a mess with old liquor bottles and cigarette butts everywhere, and a huge layer of animal hair blanketing everything from his three dogs and 4 cats. He's also putting himself in danger because his massive collection of firearms are just lying everywhere around the house, loaded, and in dangerous places like cabinets and underneath couch cushions. He is also being taken advantage of by a manipulative 50 year old woman that dresses and acts like she's 20 and is having him buy her motorcycles, expensive clothing, and causing him to drink more and more.

He still loves God though. He talked to me a bit about his Orthodoxy and we shared our experiences with each other as we both converted form hostile families. He still makes an effort to read his nightly prayers, even in his bad health and emotional state. I feel a great deal of sorrow for him. He needs help from above.
