Not sure what to make of this. I know the official state numbers are a joke and the Church has done it's own "unofficial" census, but these numbers are much higher than anything I've seen before. The 7 million expats seems especially suspect.

Twenty-Three Million Coptic Christians in Egypt, Says Authority
By Raymond Ibrahim on December 11, 2013 in From The Arab World

Dr. Essam Abdullah, a professor of philosophy at Egypt’s Ain Shams University and a regular political commentator on Arabic media, including Al Jazeera, recently made some startling remarks on a televised program: that there are “more than 23 million Copts in Egypt,” out of a total population of nearly 90 million, with an additional 7 million Copts outside Egypt.

This would be excellent if true. I hope it is.

Can anyone verify?

EDIT: Well, according to this aritcle, written by a Muslim, a civil registry official says that we are 20 million strong:

Perhaps, they can take a census of the school systems.  How many students are registered "Christians" and how many are registered "Muslims".  Is that too difficult to count?  That could give us an idea or estimate how many in the population there is, notwithstanding the birthing rate of Muslims if they are indeed higher.

Well the British census of 1882 put our numbers at 10%, when there were only 6 million people living in Egypt. How reliable said census was is debatable. The British colonialists might very well have downplayed the number of Copts just to appease the Muslim majority.

There should be the ability to take count of them all by national ID cards, right? I thought to enroll in school in Egypt one needed the ID which lists religion on it....somewhere, in some hot and dusty building in Cairo that info. exists in one place. Maybe.

^The govt. could easily reveal the actual number of Christians in Egypt. They just don't want to.
