How to prepare for confession?
« on: December 10, 2013, 01:58:32 PM »
I have a confession scheduled tomorrow. Any suggestions how to prepare for it?

Ideally, my own preparation involves prayer and an "examination of conscience".  There are different ways of doing that.  A number of them can be found online: this is one example, but there are others which pop up fairly easily.  Typically, I will use one of these if I'm pressed for time, but if I have time, I'll read Exodus 20 (the Ten Commandments) and Matthew 5-7 (the entire Sermon on the Mount), and perhaps other passages if I feel so moved, and I'll ask myself how I live up to those standards.  I try to keep everything in my mind, but I might jot down some notes if I feel I might leave out something due to nerves or the sheer number of my sins.  I pray the "Seven Penitential Psalms", the Prayer of Manasseh, my own prayer, and try to relax.  :)

I'd focus especially on those questions of the kind " did you do x with y relative/family member". There are so many of those questions.

You must have used this as your confession guide:

i would follow mor ephrem's advice.

also i suggest you focus on bad attitudes like anger, lust, rebellion, hate etc. these are at the root of various sins (yelling at people, rude emails to your boss etc.) so if you're like me and have a lot of sins to mention, you can shorten it by saying (e.g.)
i am mean to people, i yell at people, i keep wishing i had lots of possessions, i worry a lot instead of praying about things etc. etc. and then the priest can ask you to give examples where appropriate (i yelled at my friend yesterday, i wished i had my friend's fast car on saturday etc. etc.)
that way you bring forgiveness and healing to various areas of your life that have been not functioning properly.

it's not really about a list of "do"s and "don't"s.

if you are really sincere and ready to throw out everything that keeps you far from God, then God will guide you and you will be closer to Him.
may God bless u.
