The four Flint-area Orthodox churches will join Friday-Feb. 1 for a new
youth and adult event that will raise funds for the Orthodox Christian
Mission Center in St. Augustine, Fla., a pan-Orthodox organization
sponsoring church mission programs around the world.

Called "White Fields," the program consists of a 40-hour fast for youths
starting Friday and culminating with an auction at 7 p.m. Feb. 1.

The events will be held at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 3170 W.
Beecher Road, Flint Township. Other participating churches are St. George
Antiochian Orthodox Church, Flint Township; St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of
America, Burton; and St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Mission Church of Fenton.

The youth fast begins with an Orthodox Friday fast in the tradition of
early Christian practice of abstaining from animal products and then moving
into a stricter fast of only water and juice for most of the 40 hours.

On auction night, the church family and friends come together in a
game-show atmosphere pitting family against family, choir against youth,
skits and other entertainment involving a wide range of ages.
Orthodox Christian Mission Center funds missionaries and their ministries,
mission education, teams and priests, theological training and relief
projects in Eastern Europe, Africa, Central and South America, Southeast
Asia, North America and the Middle East.

This is an interesting idea.  It is good to see things like this, especially teaching the children about fasting.
