WP - What did Jesus do on Holy Saturday?

Every Christian knows the story: Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. But what did he do on Saturday?

That question has spurred centuries of debate, perplexed theologians as learned as St. Augustine and prodded some Protestants to advocate editing the Apostles’ Creed, one of Christianity’s oldest confessions of faith.

Read Hans Urs von Balthasar for an enlightening perspective.

Which book?  I still need to get to Metropolitan Hilarion's book on this topic.

Admittedly I'm not very well read on these matters as my interest level in them was quite low but what I read in Balthasar was at least an attempt to explain the phrase in the creed in a way hat makes sense to a modern reader .

Was it a book or an article?  Does it have a title?  Now you've got me intrigued.  :)

Mysterium Paschale afaik is an extract of a larger book on the oeconomy of salvation but its nowadays printed as a book on its own.

I find him equally enlightening - and I'm no von-Balthasarist myself.

There's plenty of him to read.

Thanks, I'll look that up.  First Orthonorm got me interested in picking up Rahner, and now you are doing the same with von Balthasar.

Ah, Ignatius Press.  They are good at overdoing a good thing.  :P

The hymnography of Holy Saturday, at least in EO tradition, has the answer.

Trust me, you really, really don't want to hear me sing.  :P :laugh:

The Blessed Sabbath?  The same thing He did on the first one. He rested, just not figuratively this time (in the tomb).
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth
