Help me please, cause I'm terrible with electronic gadgets.
So I have this by now ancient macbook (2008) that's still running some ancient version of OSX. I was recently tricked into installing the latest version of firefox-which I prefer to Safari- but can't use it because "You cannot use this version of the application Firefox with this version of Mac OS X."
What should I do now?

Here's some information that might help.

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox
(Firefox older versions)

Maybe try buying 10.6.8 (I think it's like $20) and upgrading to either mavericks or mountain lion?

Augustin, do you know which model you are using? Is it a 2008 aluminum unibody?

Check this table:

http://www.gearzap.com/blog/2010/01/guide-which-macbook-do-i-have/

Depending on what you have, you might be able to make that old computer nearly as zippy as a new macbook. (It will lack certain capabilities, but none you would care about).

First step is figuring out what macbook you have.

BTW, this is aside from your current problem.

augustin, all things being equal, chrome runs the best on older hardware in my experience. I use a 2008 unibody, but I use all main browsers and others.

That being said, you want to remove Firefox.

What version of OS X are you using? 10.?.?

Liza's links are helpful. If you need help PM me beyond that or want to upgrade your computer to make it a little more responsive and the like. Do the same. We are similar boats and I recently when through the decision whether to put more money into the computer or go without one or buy something really cheap.

In the end, upgrading made a lot of sense.

Really, then you uninstalling Firefox should be as easy as simply dragging its icon in the application fold to the trashcan.

This will delete most of the files associated with the program.

Looking over mozilla's website, it looks like they don't want to support any of their legacy browsers which would have worked on OS X 10.5.x.

Arguably the best OS X 10 version is 10.6.8. It should run on your machine; it is the most stable version to date and many people like myself have avoided 10.7, 10.8, and likely 10.9 due to some odd choices made by Apple regarding how they are managed their desktop OS.

If you don't want to upgrade to 10.6.8. It costs $20 basically. You could work around mozilla's attempts to protect you from yourself, see option 3 here:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-no-longer-works-mac-os-x-10-5

If you would like any help with your options whether upgrading or otherwise, let me know.

Based on your model, it is 99% likely that your machine will run much faster with 10.6.8.

augustin,

Just to give you an idea where you will be starting to get FF back up and working with 10.5.x, assuming your machine in an intel based one:

Quote
Quote
Firefox 16.0.2 is the last version that works on an Intel Mac with the OS X 10.5 operating system.

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/16.0.2/mac/
You can consider to install the last Firefox 10.0.x ESR version.

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0.12esr/
Firefox 17.0x ESR has replaced the Firefox 10 ESR version, so you won't receive updates.

Yes, but while there are people here I'd happily fast with, augustin isn't one of them.  I think we'd both be happier without such strictures.  Tongue
