On Nov. 25, Pope Francis I of the Roman Catholic Church will meet with Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia.

From the article:
Quote
Popes Benedict and John Paul had standing invitations from the Russian government but could not go because they received no matching invitation from the Orthodox Church. Francis would need the same to go to Russia.

Another dispute between the churches concerns the fate of many church properties that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin ordered confiscated from Eastern Rite Catholics, who worship in an Orthodox liturgy but owe their allegiance to Rome.

I'm pretty sure Putin is President of Russia.  He was prime minister under Medvedev.

Quote
Moscow, November 12 - Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Churches must be accelerated, senior officials from both faiths said Tuesday. The Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Angelo Scola, and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, met in Moscow while at the same time in Vatican City Pope Francis received Metropolitan Hilarion, head of external church relations for the Russian Orthodox Church.

I'd be fine if he persuaded him to get the Filioque out of the creed. Of course, he'd likely get flak from Traditional Catholics and Protestants for that.

I'd wager a bet that he is more interested in forming a geopolitical 'grand alliance' with the Roman Church, an institution most socially powerful in the 'third world' and now led by a non-European with leftist ideological underpinnings. To Russia, this alliance would be a counterweight to the secular forces of the EU and the unpredictable  Protestant orientated 'exceptionalism' he seems to think predominates American strategic thinking - both of which he views as hostile to a strong, politically important Russia.

Yeah...Putin has many hobbies--fishing, hunting, showing off his body, etc.--but I don't think "defending the monarchia of the Father" is one of them.

What?

He is interested in forming an alliance with the so-called third world against both the Islamists and the EU/USA alliance. The RCC remains the largest power player in that bloc, hence it is sensible for Russia to seek a form of political 'detente' with the Vatican. It doesn't mean that he views it as an opening for the Orthodox to develop closer relations with the RCC, but, I fear that there are many within the Curia and the Vatican establishment who view it as an opportunity to evangelize in Russia proper.

I have a feeling Pope Francis intends to be friendly, but is wary of Putin. Most Westerners I know, Protestant or Catholic, regard him as a suspicious little weasel who's too close to being Red for comfort.
