Goat's Disappointment
« on: November 04, 2013, 12:38:19 PM »
There was a line on p. 15 of the Nov. 3 Orthros which threw a curve at me, http://www.ematins.org/english/eNov03.pdf.    It is part of the Theotokion:  "O Virgin, there is not in me any hope of salvation. For I have fallen grievously into a pit of vices. And I await what was threatened, namely ghastly punishment to share the goat's disappointment.  Pity me before my trial, ardent helper that you are, my Lady the Theotokos."

What does it mean by "goat's disappointment?" Is it referring to instructions in Leviticus pertaining to letting a goat into the wilderness while sacrificing another goat during the Day of Atonement? Or could it be going further back referencing the Canaanite's belief in goat demons, which the ancient Israelites were supposed to stamp out?

Please don't project meta-debates onto me.

^ Thanks.  I didn't think about it from that angle.
