Those who actually know internet, let's start help others using it correctly.

For example, hijacking lately as been thrown around a lot and incorrectly so.

What is hijacking when properly understood? Please provide examples for discussion, if clarity calls for it.

I've explained some internet before to no avail, but maybe having a thread dedicated to it will help others. For example, troll here is used incorrectly about 99% of the time.

Hijacking is when someone replies to a thread with a post that has no intention of remaining on topic and would rather side track the discussion to something else.

How a thread then gets derailed is when members respond to the hijacker's post and can even add to further side track the thread.

So how to prevent?

Be specific in your thread title and OP, and whoever is the OP needs to keep it to the original topic.

BTW for those that didn't understand orthonorm's SNR usage (signal to noise ratio), it means that offtopic banter and spam is considered to be noise whereas proper discussion is signal.

His point is that there is no signal lately but almost pure noise. We should be encouraging each other on creating better forum content than engaging in those that would rather contribute to noise. Of course there are times when noise can be good.

I know from the mouth of a hypocrite, but just saying.

I would suggest to hijack speaks to a larger pattern in a poster's behavior. Repeatedly posting in multiple threads with rather diverse topics always attempting to steer the discussion to the often volatile pet topic of their own.

Posting without the intent of being "on topic" has always been good internetz. Anyone who has weathered overly modded groups and boardz, knows that the attempt to end all "off topic" discussion is the kiss of death for that group or board.

Good internet practice when a thread derails, goes off topic without any malintent, is to separate the threads.

Man, I was a great mod. Really, nothing but love for my touch.

Which I've thought this boards has done a good job about.

I like your definition better than mine. Obviously a thread will go into different directions, it happens.

Sometimes hijacking is hard to spot cause the pet topic of the hijacker can be so broad as to arguably be nearly always on topic.

One could hijack many threads in the Faith Issues section by playing the Problem of Evil Card.

It could genuinely be a problem that poster really struggles with or it could be a way of hijacking. Here is where a decade or so experience of board and group usage becomes helpful.

So hijacking can't be a one time only event. It doesn't even necessarily be wildly off topic. Again, it is a pattern of behavior by a single poster who seems intent of boiling nearly any thread down to a single topic.

One could argue this has been going since at least Socrates and some topics truly do emerge in nearly any thread once they get serious and formal enough. Eventually, whether you like it or not, ontology will rear its head.

Again, the community and moderators are the best judges of whether or not something is hijacking but only first if they know what hijacking is.

Uh-oh.

Honestly, I've been really amused by the recent bickering on the forum. It is a lot better than the type of religious discussion that goes on.

Maybe I can do something about that. Until then, I hope the bickering is allowed to continue.

It is no coincidence that the brightest posters here start the fewest threads.

Why are cats such a popular thing on the internet?

Yeah I've seen some funny pictures of them, but don't understand the obsession.

I still love the who's awesome dog:

What came to mind later is that some people would argue that they prefer cats behavior, personality type, to dogs in general. Some people are weird that way. Roll Eyes

Nope. Not agreeing with that in the slightest. My then-stepmother found a tiny kitten in a box behind the grocery store circa 1990 and brought it home because, well, you can't just leave a tiny kitten out in the elements to die. She already had one cat, but y'know. At the time, the new arrival was so freaked out and skittish that nobody could really approach it without it screaming and clawing at you. We figured it was shell-shocked so when it retreated under the bed in the master bedroom and refused to come out, nobody forced the issue. My stepmother put out a dish of food and bowl of water and let it be.

Fast forward 8 years later and the darn thing was still under the bed, and only came out like a ninja assassin skulking through enemy territory to eat its food and drink its water, and scratch and hiss at the other cats (there were 2 more by that point) if they got too close while it was eating. Oh, and occasionally it would attack your feet if you got too close to the fringe of the bedspread and it felt threatened. Maybe this kind of behavior is at least sort of cute when they're kittens and small, but by the second year after its rescue we had all simply written it off as crazy and irreparably broken. Rather than taking it with her when they divorced, my stepmother turned it over to a shelter because it was too much to handle.

Sometimes found cats (or dogs) were lost for a reason, as sad as that is.

That's sad.

My cat was not a kitten when we adopted it, and he was definitely "lost on purpose".  But he was an absolute delight, we never had any problems with him (not even allergies, though other cats do bother us).  He died on the day after Christmas in 2001.  I miss him still.

No, it's persecution of non-Chalcedonians.

Sure, the Chalcedonians can talk about cats and dogs all they want, but when those uppity Miaphysites dare to have an opinion, it needs to be stopped by any means necessary (e.g., accusations of thread derailment).

As a further derail and from a cat aficionado, it is important to understand that a cat that is not exposed to humans within the first 6 weeks of it's life will almost never become a suitable house cat and they maintain their feral instincts throughout there entire life.  Interestingly, kittens who are bottle fed also end up being feral because kittens need the discipline from their mothers to learn social behavior as it is not instinctual.

Now, back to regular programing.  Please continue persecuting the non-Chalcedonians.  They deserve it.

We got a kitten and it did the same thing at first, only she used my dresser to hide under, however later she came out and played with me on the bed, she was not afraid of humans, but all her life she showed paranoid tendencies , she would sit on your lap and be normal, but she always showed behavior that seemed to me that she had a mental issue, and it lasted all her life. Later we got another cat and she was friendly with it after a while, but she was never normal as far as most cats.

I disagree, keeping topics from going off topic is a good thing and it does not matter if people don't like it and stop going to that forum. It keeps bad people away. like me!

in another forum, I have many infractions which never go away, if I get any more I will be banned for some time! So, I be very careful to not just write whatever pops in my head! That is the way to discipline on a forum!!! .... not that I like it, but that is the way I would do it at least since it worked on me

That's sad.

My cat was not a kitten when we adopted it, and he was definitely "lost on purpose".  But he was an absolute delight, we never had any problems with him (not even allergies, though other cats do bother us).  He died on the day after Christmas in 2001.  I miss him still.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Was his name Timothy, by any chance?

Let it be know that we here acknowledge the 'Rulz of Orthonorm'.

1. Orthonorm plays the internetz, we are his pieces.

2. You do not talk about fight club.

3.
orthonorm does not play dice with the forum; he plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

I do not consider this internet. This is something I might have seen on the Jack Paar show in the early 1960s (some entertainer trying to plug their own schtick).

I have been on the internet since 1980 (I believe it was termed Darpanet when I started). It wasn't perfect. In order to successfully send a file by ftp one often had to go to the hub maps to directly specify the path from one hub to the next to the next to the next in order for it to get to its destination. If I recall correctly each hub was separated by the pipe symbol (I only mention this because instead of |, it might have been \! or \|, I just do not remember).

I also purchased a Commodore 64 before it came out (around 1982), purchased a 300 baud modem a year or two later, and I did post at BBS's. So historically, I might be considered someone that is somewhat knowledgeable about the internet.

Back to the original sentence. The media does not determine the phenomenon above. It is just the prevalent media.
