Alaverdi cathedral and monastery, in Georgia

Hi Everyone !

I'm Catholic, and in the Catholic Church there "religious orders."  These are religious communities of men or women that are organized for some kind of specific work.  For example, the "Medical Mission Sisters" are an order of nuns who provide medical services in missions in poor places in the world; and the Franciscans try to serve the poor and to inspire everyone by living a life of simplicity in the midst of the world.  Etc.

My question is this:  Do the Orthodox have similar religious orders?  If yes, what are some examples and where can I learn more about them?  If no, why not?

Thank you for your responses.

No, Orthodox monasteries* are independent of each other. That's just the way our monastic discipline evolved.

* monastery refers to either male or female communities in the eastern church

ROCOR has a couple of Benedictine monasteries, in that they follow the rule of St. Benedict and worship in the western rite.  But yeah, they are independent.
