In a mood for metal today

But I don't know who are good artists and who might have Christian-friendly or anti-Christian lyrics.

Who can I just throw on for background music?

You are welcome.

Metal comes in many styles - loud guitars are only one element. It would help if you told us a few more details about things you enjoy and things you want to avoid. Do you want it classic style? Extra fast? Male or female vocals? Okay with influences from other musical styles? Etc.

Scorpions are great all around metal with good slow songs. Petra is a metal christian group, although I know little about them.

Iron Maiden!  A lot if their songs are based off literature, historical events, Tv shows, etc.  good stuff all around and excellent musicianship.  Judas Priest us bery similr in style to them but not nerly as profound.  If you want the darker side, I recommend Megadeth, Slayer, early Black Sabbath.

I'd just throw on some Demilich - Nespithe or some Kriegsmaschine - Altered States of Divinity for some casual metal listening.

I like Om for background listening. God is Good and Advaitic Songs are their last two albums, which I recommend over the others.

My favourite metal band of all time is Blind Guardian. They are inspired by classical fantasy and sci-fi literature, particularly Tolkien (they've even done an album of the Silmarillion), and their musical style is simply epic.

They are indeed epic. It's like if movies were never invented BG would be the ideal answer to 'how do we give the reader more of what we want him to feel'

Where is the mosh emoticon when you need it.  ;D
All opinions expressed by myself are quite tragically my own, and not those of any other poster or wall hangings.

I spent a few days reading Guy Gabriel Kay's Tigana and listening to A Night at the Opera On the train, and the two are forever linked since. ;)

You could try some of the later Albums of Katatonia. I have the Great Cold Distance and I rather like it. I haven't read the lyrics but I don't think they are anyhow Satanic
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Their first full-length from 1993 "Dance of December Souls" is easily one of the greatest metal albums ever written. It's in a melodic death/doom/black style. Check it out.
