Pray for the Christians of Iraq and Syria.

« on: February 13, 2005, 07:35:32 PM »

Hi,

I run my church's book program.  Among other things, we always keep a few Russian Bibles on hand, as there are some people in our congregation who read and write Russian more comfortably than Armenian.  I just ran out of our last bunch of Russian Bibles and I need to order more.  The Bibles that we just ran out of were from the American Bible Society.  However, someone told me that these Bibles had the Protestant canon, not the Orthodox one.

I want to order Russian Bibles that have the Orthodox canon.  Does anyone know where I can easily get these?  Is there an online Russian Orthodox bookstore that has them?

Thanks,
Salpy

I think if you contact the bookstore at St. Tikhon's they can help you.

Salpy,

You may also order them online or by phone through Light and Life publishing at $14.95 each.

Here is their description of them:

Quote
Contains references and maps. It is a Holy Synod Version which is a more traditional translation. Language: Russian. 5" x 7". 1312 pages.

and here is a direct link to the page where I got that from:

http://www.light-n-life.com/shopping/order_product.asp?ProductNum=RUSS120

Hope this helps you out!

Although it looks like you may have found your source for Russian Bibles, I would think Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY could definitely help you with this.

This may be your best resource for Russian Bibles since Jordanville is notoriously bad at getting orders filled if you order by email, phone or fax. In person they are pretty good at letting you buy things though!

I'm having trouble finding Russian Bibles again.  All the usual places don't have them.  Are they out of print?  Can anyone give me a direct link to a place which they know has them?

You have to watch out: these are the synodal translation, but mutilated (the books not accepted by the Protestants are left out).

I have ordered books (including Bibles in Russian) from Jordanville for more than 15 years and have never had a problem getting an order filled.  I have even had the man on the phone check if they have a book before I order it and have had no problems.

We carry Russian Bibles and Prayer books in our Church bookstore.  If some are needed right away, I could send them.

I ran across this; it appears to be a US-based store. Might be worth checking into: http://russlovo.com/books/detail/15487/new/eng

I think I found the bookstore you are referring to, and I found this page:

http://holytrinity.anthology.com/Product.aspx

I know very little Russian, and I want to make sure I understand correctly:

Are the first two items Russian Bibles, Old and New Testaments?  Is the difference between them the size, with the second one being larger?  ("bolshogo" means large, right?)

The last item is the New Testament and Psalms, right?

What is the third item?  Is it a Gospel book?

That would be my guess.  However, I always call the bookstore and tell them exactly what I want and they have been very good at answering questions and getting me what I am after.

The Armenian canon is either identical or very similar to the EO canon.  We have the Septuagint.

I called the monastery in Jordanville and they have several of both the large and small Russian Bibles in stock, as well as the New Testament and Psalms.  They are out of the Slavonic Gospels, which I think was the third item that was on the link.  This is great, as every other place I have contacted is completely out of Russian Bibles.

I was going to order more of the large Russian Bibles from the monastery, but I saw that they were out of stock:

http://holytrinity.anthology.com/Product.aspx

Then I did a google search and found this on amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/Russian-Bible-Deuterocanonicals-Apocrypha/dp/5855240282/ref=sr_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1323057534&sr=1-14

Does anyone know about this one?  It seems great, in that it has the Deuterocanonicals.  I think the ones I got from the monastery had the Protestant canon.

Is the Bible on amazon.com a new one?  Has anyone seen it or heard about it?

The cover looks the same as this one: http://russlovo.com/books/detail/43831/search/bibliya/eng for which Google Translate says:

Bible translation into Russian by the Russian Bible Society launched by Imperial command of the emperor Alexander I in 1816, renewed at the Imperial assent of the Emperor Alexander II in 1858, completed and published with the blessing of the Holy Synod in 1876.

In the Old Testament in square brackets the words vzyatyi authors Synodal translation of the Septuagint (the Greek and the Bible).

The text of the New Testament in square brackets words, taken from the Slavonic translation or later Greek manuscripts.

It would seem to be what you're looking for, were I to guess.
