I would bet money they got Toledo wrong on that map.  Steelers would be a distant 3rd.  Detroit is usually considered home team for professional Sports in Toledo , with large swaths of Cleveland and some Pittsburgh fans when it comes to pro sports (College is kind of complex: but OSU is probably more popular than MI and ND has many fans as well) .  Maybe because Cleveland has been comically irrelevant for a very long time, and the Lions only marginally, better has Pittsburgh been able to get more popular over the years...I would still put them as the 3rd most popular NFL team by a fair margin.  Deshone Kizer is from Toledo, and if he breaks the Browns long streak in irrelevant QB's the Browns may get even more popular.

I'm from "the glass capital of the world", but my bastard name would be steel and not glass?  I guess it's a cooler last name, and when I want to annoy people I force them to call me "Damascus Steel".  So I guess that works, even though I think glass would be more appropriate.

That's funny, that about matches the images I have when I see Europeans in tracksuits and sports apparel in Chicago.  There are some major exceptions, but I guess from the map you could almost make the generalization Adidas = Orthodox, Nike = Protestant, Puma = Catholic

This is a pretty cool map now that we have October baseball,  it goes to the zip code level.  I was surprised to see the Tigers had that much of an edge over the Indians in Toledo.  Even more surprised to see the freaking Yankees come in 3rd, I thought that would be Cincinnati or Pittsburgh.

Strange that the Pirates only have 51% in Blair county PA, which is where their AA affiliate is. I could see if the Phillies were taking a much larger share, since it's more towards the center of the state, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Also interesting looking at the Nationals, and how they only have 20-40% support in their local area.

My guesses:

The Nats are a new team without as much tradition and locally have to compete with Orioles and other blue blood east coast teams.  Plus DC is a strange city in demographics with alot of non natives

As for the pirates,  it's in a competitive area for baseball,  they're a small market team,  and all other surrounding teams are high market and have had more success.

You're probably right on both counts. I've lived at several places in Blair County, for a total of about 5 years, but that was mostly in the 90s and I don't really recall specifics about baseball fandom.

Rooting for small market teams is a pain, even when they do good.  My Al team is the Indians, my NL is the Bucs...on both accounts Chicago fans and media coverage enraged me in the past few playoff / world series events.  I was particularly angry how ultra rich celebs, ESPN and other national sports coverage, and fair weather fans drove up prices for Cleveland natives at the world series, and drowned out the voice of anything other than Chicago hype.  To rub salt in my open wounds, I live in the heart of the beast and have to deal with Chicago's obnoxious fans in the ER after they win and do stupid things to their bodies during victory celebrations.  It feels kind of like something Dante might write about.

This Aramaic map looks weird to me, there are speakers in Iran and across the Caucasus.

I saw it from a distance and thought the first map only showed the Iranian community.  :P  There's still Caucasus, though. And I wonder what the purple area stands for, I see the pink area is where Aramaic was once spoken.

I've read Aramaic was once considered a dead language in the West, I wonder when this changed, and even whether the general populace of the Levant were aware of their own linguistic diversity.

Maybe the Caucasus area is either outside the traditional range of Aramaic, or else the communities there are not solely (or 80%) Aramaic speakers. Probably there are no Aramaic cities there or collections of a dozen Aramaic villages. It's more like a diaspora mixed in with primarily Armenian speakers, maybe?

Something to show people who claim that all Greece's woes are due to the people being lazy.

People can be very lazy and still be on the clock.

Most likely this would be a management problem. Not that many people could stand sitting or standing around and doing nothing for days  or hours on end. A lot of people quit during Carly Fiorina's tenure at HP  because of this, before the layoffs.

Quote
Involuntary slacking may seem blissful, but eventually, most of us will crave some type of meaningful activity. Many would say that the underworked should talk to their bosses, but that doesn't always help. I spoke with a Swedish bank clerk who said he was only doing 15 minutes' worth of work a day. He asked his manager for more responsibilities, to no avail, then told his boss of his idleness. Did he get more to do? Barely. When I spoke with him, he was working three-hour days—there were laws that barred any workday shorter than that—and his intervention only added another 15 minutes to his workload.

I wouldn't trust inane maps like that. I bet it doesn't take into account the distinctiion between full-time and part-time jobs and multiple other variables.

I agree,  these maps are fun, but shouldn't be taken too seriously unless you really want to dig into the data,  other graphs with empt titles like "countries that have the best work/ life balance ", or "happiness measured by country"  are things that definitely make me raise an eyebrow and set off some yellow flags.

So Germans work 13 hours less than Greeks.
Optimisation.

I wouldn't trust inane maps like that. I bet it doesn't take into account the distinctiion between full-time and part-time jobs and multiple other variables.

You can check how the numbers were reached here.

Includes both full-time and part-time jobs. So basically the map is useless to pretty much anything. The amount of part-time jobs for one depends on how strictly the jobs markets are being regulated at the time of compilation of data.

Man, you're really invested in making the Greeks out to be lazy bums...
Please don't project meta-debates onto me.
