OK, so now not only is my browser still mute, but.......

I may have to do something a bit more drastic, as I think something's latched onto my PC...I try to run Start>Find in an attempt to locate random files and nothing opens up to the right except a little flicker of a few pixels in the corner of the Find box.  I've used NAV, AdAware and Search and Destroy, and it still does it. 

FWIW, these files I'm looking for are certain programs I've never personally downloaded that start running in the background upon startup (I see them only in the Ctrl+Alt+Del task manager).

So I'm probably going to reinstall W98--It's just not financially possible to get another OS right now, w/baby on the way--as a bit of damage control.  You said, Cap'n, in a PM that I could do that w/out losing my data...so, would that mean I just put the CD for W98 in the CD-ROM and reinstall without having to do a backup CD of My Documents et al?

Pedro wait!

A reinstall will wipe the contents of "My Documents". Copy all your important files to a separate directory on "C:" first or rename "My Documents" to something else.

See, that's what I thought! Maybe I'm not as clueless as I thought (riiiiiight...).

Don't worry; you caught me in time. I wasn't going to make any kind of move until I heard from someone here. I'm hoping to be able to back up everything I need this afternoon (which'll be...early tomorrow morning where you are?) and reinstall.
