Unless what she means to ask is if we can tell if the meat at the counter has been slaughtered according to kosher/halal rules.

Far-fetched, I know, but the reconstructionist teacher must get the occasional run around.

I know kosher/parve labelling is pretty reliable as it's standardized.  There are some halal butchers where I live and I think it's the same as far as labelling.  In the end, get to know your butcher/grocer so you can trust him better and his products.
