Groan!

Quote
"What people say when they speak on their own account is repellent and murksome, for their words do not come from the living spring of the Spirit, but are spawned from the morass of their own heart, a bog infested with the leeches, snakes and frogs of desire, delusion and dissipation; the water of their knowledge is evil-smelling, turbid and torpid, sickening to those who drink it and filling them with nausea and disgust."

No, although it sounds a lot more dignified to call it accidie rather than sloth or something like that.  :P

No, I found myself groaning after reading inane post after inane post today.  And then I thought about the green poison control stickers I used to get in grade school to put on all the aerosol cans so that I could remind myself not to consume the contents.  The guy on the sticker is named Mr Yuk.  I felt like him today.  That's all.

Oh, OK.  I thought Mr. Yuk was supposed to exemplify something from St. Evagrius' Praktikos.

Bummer.

One wonders what St. Evagrius, or any of the Desert Fathers, would have said about religious discussion forums.

St. Ephraim the Syrian said:
O Lord and Master of my life, give me not the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust for power and idle talk.
But grant unto me, Thy servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see mine own faults and not to judge my brother. For blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

I remember that stuff. They must have done a good job drilling it into my head as a kid.

Mr. Yuk says no! Keep away! Do not touch!
"The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny--it is the light that guides your way." - Heraclitus

Turn that frown, upside down!

Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.
—St. Isaac of Syria

The memory of God should be treasured in our hearts like the precious pearl mentioned in the Holy Gospel. Our life's goal should be to nurture and contemplate God always within, and never let it depart, for this steadfastness will drive demons away from us. - Paraphrased from St. Philotheus of Sinai
Writings from the Philokalia: On Prayer of the Heart,
Translated from the Russian by E. Kadloubovksy and G.E.H. Palmer, Faber and Faber, London, Boston, 1992 printing.
