Anyone know what that is?
« on: August 13, 2013, 10:24:19 AM »
I was at a Greek church in Florida that was recently consecrated.  They were giving out these little round can things with an icon of their patron saint (St. John the Theologian) on the front. When you open it, theres a little piece of cloth inside which appears to have some sort of glue or wax on it. On the back of the can it has the date of the consecration on it. The whole can is about the size of a small hockey puck or something. Anyone know what this may be?

If needed, I may be able to post a picture later.
Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God's mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved.

Perhaps it's the same wax used when they built the altar (did they build one?) or the wax contains a small piece of a relic.

I would hope they aren't passing out relics in such a fashion.
Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.

It would be flippant to be handing out relics as souvenirs, so I would think it's highly doubtful.

There was just a basket of them by the door. I just picked one up on my way out. It doesnt appear to be fancy or anything, so its certainly not a relic or anything. The cloth is pretty clean aside from the wax on it. Just didnt know if this was something common or not. I have never seen it before, but I also have only been around Orthodoxy for a couple years now.

It can be relic. Most  likely some cloth rubbed to his bones or something like that.
