Question about Purgatory
« on: February 17, 2005, 10:21:10 PM »
I recently read something on a Catholic website which was arguing in support of Purgatory.ÂÂ  One of the quotes from the Bible they used was this:

"But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire" - 1 Corinthians 3:15

Can anyone explain how the Catholics misinterpreted this verse?ÂÂ

Also, does anyone have any quotes from Fathers about what the Orthodox Church teaches about Purgatory?

Thank you so much!ÂÂ

Saint John Chrysostom gives an alternative interpretation of this passage in Homily 9 on First Corinthians. When the subject of purgatory was disputed at the failed union-seeking council of Florence around a thousand years later, St. Mark of Ephesus also used the same interpretation as the one given by St. John (some of his comments can be seen in an Appendix to the book The Soul After Death by Fr. Seraphim Rose). Fwiw, in my own look through the Church Fathers regarding this subject, I saw some teaching about a purgation or cleansing in the afterlife, though they made little effort to define how or why or where or when it would take place. This agnostic point of view seems to be the safest Orthodox point of view.

Thank you!

Do you, or anyone else, happen to know what the Fathers say exactly? Thanks!
