Metaphores, analogies etc.
« on: July 29, 2013, 11:59:28 AM »
To rectify some misunderstandings, in this post:

Original church???? "Original" with things made up hundreds of years after.

Why do you hate electricity so much?

even though I am fully baptized Orthodox and never was excommunicated).

You did it by yourself.

Quote
As an EO Christian (not currently practicing),

As a nonpracticing rapist...

I have not accused yeshuaisiam of being rapist. It was an analogy showing that his claims to be "non-practicing Orthodox Christian" have the same meaning as my claims to be non-practicing rapist. I technically am a non-practicing rapist (have all the stuff needed for rape etc.) but it sounds kinda silly, don't you think? One cannot be a non-practicing rapist, as well as a non-practicing Orthodox (or murdered, or nudist...).

It would be an apology if I had something to apologize for.

As a non-practicing moderator of this forum, I would lock this thread if I were practicing.  ;D

Yes, what exactly IS the point of this thread?

You may speak metaphors in English in this thread.

Life is butterfly.  It opens from its frail coccoon, is beautiful for a short times and then dies.

An alternative: Life is like a butterfly, for in your innocent naivete you may find yourself trapped by a collecter and nailed to a board for display in front of all his geek friends.

Admittedly, mine is a bit trickier to interpret and apply for most people.  8)

Like leaves on trees the race of man is found,
Now green in youth, now withering on the ground;
Another race the following spring supplies;
They fall successive, and successive rise:
At nunc desertis cessant sacraria lucis:
aurum omnes victa iam pietate colunt.

Milk production at a dairy farm was low, so the farmer wrote to the local university, asking for help from academia. A multidisciplinary team of professors was assembled, headed by a theoretical physicist, and two weeks of intensive on-site investigation took place. The scholars then returned to the university, notebooks crammed with data, where the task of writing the report was left to the team leader. Shortly thereafter the physicist returned to the farm, saying to the farmer "I have the solution, but it only works in the case of spherical cows in a vacuum."

Since the title includes analogies.

Life is like Fox News, people try to make it fair and balanced but it never will be.

I heard that in response to a movie in which the main character says "life is fair."

EDIT: Now that I think about it, that could also fit into a simile.

As further clarification, I too have not accused anyone of being a rapist.  I have also not called anyone a polywog, a curmudgeon, a bugaboo or a misanthrope   Whew!  glad we cleared these things up.

I have called several people curmudgeons :(

Though to be fair, I remember a guy posting on forums (Catholic? Protestant?) who had that as part of his username.
