What about frogs? I like frogs!

Someone told me recently that baptisms/marriages aren't allowed at all in August due to Dormition. Could someone unpackage this a bit for me? Baptisms are done during Great Lent and Nativity Lent, but not Dormition?

Prohibition of marriages, yes, obviously. But prohibition of baptisms? Never come across it in all my years in Orthodoxy. In fact, there are several people I know who were baptized during this time.

I could think of people themselves not having it at that time, as it dampens the celebration.  But I can't think of any church regulation. Unless the Church Hall has some rule (again, with the celebration).

Does anyone really care what you think?

Marriages, in general, are not allowed the first 15 days of August and August 29th (Beheading of John the Baptist). The only time when baptisms are not performed (and it is not by prohibition, but a pious custom) is the period between Christmas and Theophany.

Whoever told you this was bizarrely misinformed.

I would suggest most persons in general avoid any question beginning with why.

Marriages would only be prohibited during the fast and on the feast itself, IIRC not during the entire month unless one's in some strange bi-calendrical parish and the husband is on the new calendar and the wife on the old calendar and the priest has made some sort of issue out of it with the bishop unaware or consenting.

Haven't even come across that one in my time, I've been to several baptisms at that time of the year, in both Greek and Russian tradition, including my own.  Smiley

Babies baptized during the Dormition Fast become vampires. I heard it from a grandma somewhere.

This is usually the deciding factor in my experience.  Ethnic people love meat.
