Jovan Vraniškovski was arrested in 2011 and in 2012 sentenced to two and a half years of prison by the Court of Veles for embezzling 250,000 Euros; money he used while he was a bishop in the non-canonical Macedonian Orthodox Church to buy lands in Ohrid.

Ever since his detainment in 2011, Metropolitan Jovan was according to reports under very harsh conditions. He appealed to the verdict so the trial was repeated in front of the High Court in Skopje; where his sentenced was increased to a total of three years. All 18 members of the Ohrid Archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church have been found guilty as co-conspirators.

Metropolitan Jovan has been under watch by international humanitarian organizations and NGOs; he is considered a prisoner of conscience and even the US State Department has written in his support; the incident has led to decrease in relations between the Slavic Macedonians and other Eastern Orthodox nations, and especially the Serbs. Both Archbishop John and his clergymen had been over the years in FYROM subjected to intensified pressure, physical assaults and desolation of their property, including ecclesiastical. They are very unpopular and according to some mostly hated in the Republic of Macedonia

The accusations were first raised in 2006, when the Veles Court acquitted him of the charges for embezzlement in another larger case he was being tried. Since the appeal court at Skopje had abolished the verdict, it ordered for a retrial in 2007, in which the Veles Court again acquitted him of the charges. However the Appeal Court of Skopje had again abolished the verdict and ordered for a retrial in 2008; according to Jovan's lawyers they weren't informed of the court hearing, so they did not appear and FYROM authorities issued warrants for arrest. The case was dragged on to 2010 with John fleeing FYROM and in 2011 Bulgaria after Sophia's Appeal Court's decision finally deciding not to extradite him to FYROM, on allegations that he would not have a fair trial.

According to many, the 250,000 Euros supposedly stolen from the MOC while he held important positions in it in 1998-2002 are nothing but the Macedonian Church's inventions, in an effort to discredit him.
Archbishop John still maintains his innocence and will continue to fight with all available means for what he claims is justice.

John's fate is the reason why there is no negotiation between the Serbian and Macedonian Orthodox Churches for ending the MOC's schism. The other main opponent is the Greek Orthodox Church, with the whole situation being there due to the Macedonian naming dispute. Although not so extreme, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church also has a very negative approach towards the MOC.

Heresy and schism doesn't like competition from the Orthodox.
