“This goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”

George Washington letter to the Members of the New Church in Baltimore
Date: January 27, 1793
We have abundant reason to rejoice that in this Land the light of truth and reason has triumphed over the power of bigotry and superstition, and that every person may here worship God according to the dictates of his own heart. In this enlightened Age and in this Land of equal liberty it is our boast, that a man's religious tenets will not forfeit the protection of the Laws, nor deprive him of the right of attaining and holding the highest Offices that are known in the United States.

“If your heart has been softened either by repentance before God or by learning the boundless love of God towards you, do not be proud with those whose hearts are still hard. Remember how long your heart was hard and incorrigible.
Seven brothers were ill in one hospital. One recovered from his illness and got up and rushed to serve his other brothers with brotherly love, to speed their recovery. Be like this brother. Consider all men to be your brothers, and sick brothers at that. And if you come to feel that God has given you better health than others, know that it is given through mercy, so in health you may serve your frailer brothers.

“As a person becomes more spiritual, so much fewer rights does he have in this life. It is obligatory to be patient, to accept injustice, to accept evil words from others. A crooked person who is distant from God has many rights: to strike and shout and act unrighteously. God keeps our rights for the other life. Out of ignorance however we often seek our rights here. Let us not damage things at all. If they say anything to us, immediately we give them the right. And later we think we trust in God. Human justice doesn’t mean anything to a spiritual person. But it is a great concern for the perverted person.”

“A wise and noble Christian maiden should bring honor to her earthly father by glorifying her Heavenly One. In addition, she should love her brothers in Christ enough to show concern for their spiritual welfare. She should remain aware of her duty to remain true to her future husband, and be sensitive to the fact that any boy she meets is most likely someone else’s future husband. It is true that each man and boy is responsible to guard his own eyes (Job 31:1), but a virtuous maiden doesn’t make it difficult for him.”

“But why, you say, do our children need such wisdom and strict behavior? This is the very thing that is so destructive – that you think such an important matter, the support of our life is unnecessary. Having seeing your son sick in body, no one would ask why he needs perfect and strong health. To the contrary you would take every measure to return his body to a good condition, so that the illness would not return. But when children have sick souls, they say that they need to treatment; and after such words they dare to call themselves parents.”

"We have been given an important security—children. Therefore we shall take care of them, and take every precaution that the evil one may not steal them from us.

You, mothers, look after your daughters. This should not be difficult for you. Watch that they sit at home. First of all teach them to be pious, modest, disdaining money, and not worrying too much about fancy dress. Give them thus to marriage. If you raise your daughter this way, you will save not only her, but the husband who takes her; and not only her husband, but the children; and not only the children, but the grandchildren. If the root is good the branches will spread out more beautifully, and you will receive your reward for this.

Again, sons should also be so modest that they might be recognized by their good morals and chastity, and might earn great praise from men and from God. Let them learn to refrain themselves from extravagant possessions, to be thrifty and tenderly loving; let them learn to submit to authority. For they can in this way obtain a great reward for their parents. Then everything will be directed towards the glory of God and our salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord, to Whom with the Father and Holy Spirit be glory, dominion and honor now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen."

“You cannot be too gentle, too kind. Shun even to appear harsh in your treatment of each other. Joy, radiant joy, streams from the face of one who gives and kindles joy in the heart of one who receives. All condemnation is from the devil. Never condemn each other, not even those whom you catch committing an evil deed. We condemn others only because we shun knowing ourselves. When we gaze at our own failings, we see such a morass of filth that nothing in another can equal it. That is why we turn away, and make much of the faults of others. Keep away from the spilling of speech. Instead of condemning others, strive to reach inner peace. Keep silent, refrain from judgement. This will raise you above the deadly arrows of slander, insult, outrage, and will shield your glowing hearts against the evil that creeps around.”
St. Seraphim of Sarov

"Tell everything to your spiritual father, and the Lord will have mercy on you and you will escape delusion. But if you think that you know more about the spiritual life than your spiritual father, and you stop telling him everything about yourself in confession, then you will immediately be allowed to fall into some sort of delusion, in order that you may be corrected."

“The love of husband and wife is the force that welds society together. Men will take up arms and even sacrifice their lives for the sake of this love. St. Paul would not speak so earnestly about this subject without serious reason; why else would he say, “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord?” Because when harmony prevails, the children are raised well, the household is kept in order, and neighbors, friends, and relatives praise the result. Great benefits, both of families and states, are thus produced. When it is otherwise, however, everything is thrown into confusion and turned upside-down.”

Why among so many Christians this lust for revenge?
It's not lust for revenge, it's joy in the final justice of God, which is present in Old and New Testament.

Looking at this quote again, however, I'd have a problem with "removed from the unconscious by Freud". "Left in the unconscious by Freud" would be more precise.

From the end of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities:
The Great Khan's atlas contains also the maps of the promised lands visited in thought but not yet discovered or founded: New Atlantis, Utopia, the City of the Sun, Oceana, Tamoé, New Harmony, New Lanark, Icaria.
Kublai asked Marco: "You, who go about exploring and who see signs, can tell me toward which of these futures the favoring winds are driving us."
"For these ports I could not draw a route on the map or set a date for the landing. At times all I need is a brief glimpse, an opening in the midst of an incongruous landscape, a glint of light in the fog, the dialogue of two passersby meeting in the crowd, and I think that, setting out from there, I will put together, piece by piece, the perfect city, made of fragments mixed with the rest, of instants separated by intervals, of signals one sends out, not knowing who receives them. If I tell you that the city toward which my journey tends is discontinuous in space and time, now scattered, now more condensed, you must not believe the search for it can stop. Perhaps while we speak, it is rising, scattered, within the confines of your empire; you can hunt for it, but only in the way I have said."
Already the Great Khan was leafing through his atlas, over the maps of the cities that menace in nightmares and maledictions: Enoch, Babylong, Yahooland, Butua, Brave New World
He said: "It is all useless, if the last landing place can only be the infernal city, and it is there that, in ever-narrowing circles, the current is drawing us."
And Polo said: "The inferno of the living is not something that will be; if there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the inferno and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognize who and what, in the midst of the inferno, are not inferno, then make them endure, give them space."
Quote
“A goose to hatch the Crystal Egg after an Eagle had half-hatched it! Aye, aye, to be sure, that’s right,” said the Old Woman of Beare. “And now you must go find out what happened to it. Go now, and when you come back I will give you your name.”

“Even if others do not do what is required, we should do what is expected of us… for each will receive what he deserves. Such is a marriage in Christ, a spiritual marriage. So let not the wife wait for virtue from her husband before exercising hers, for this will be unimportant. Similarly, let not the husband wait for the good behavior of his wife before he begins to care for her, for this will longer be virtuous on his part. Let each one fulfill their responsibilities in advance.”

"Indeed the whole of St. Maximus' theology can be understood as a great hymn to the unity of all things, brought about through the creative and redemptive love of God... this is a unity in which nothing of the infinitely rich diversification of the universe is lost; all things become their true self as all are gathered up into one single complex act of adoration... 'Nothing is lost, for all in love survive.' Always the elements of unity and diversity, of the specific and the universal are held together in his thinking. Everywhere as the sundered fragments of the world come together, they are transcended yet preserved in a movement of growth and longing towards the end for which in the beginning they were created. For Maximus none of this is purely abstract or theoretical. It is the person of the incarnate Word who is at the centre of all things." - A.M. Allchin

I've always hated small talk. Life is too short. I guess I'm weird because I'm much more comfortable talking about deeply intimate and personal subjects than discussing the weather and such.

“If the world knew the force of Christ’s words, “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart,” then the whole world, the whole universe, would abandon all other knowledge for to study this heavenly science. Men are ignorant of the power of Christ’s humility, and that is why they aspire to the things of this earth; but without the Holy spirit they cannot know the force of these words of Christ. But he who has learned will never relinquish his knowledge, even were he to be offered all the kingdoms of the world.”

I do not much like to take the tone of a moralist. But the danger of the baobabs is so little understood, and such considerable risks would be run by anyone who might get lost on an asteroid, that for once I am breaking through my reserve. "Children," I say plainly, "watch out for the baobabs!"

“Knowing that marriage is meant to help each other gain salvation should let us know marriage will be a battleground. The last thing Satan wants is for us to gain salvation, and just as he played his part in breaking the communion the first married couple had, he will do his best with each of us. Our sinful passions make it far too easy to fall as his prey.
The only way to have a strong and lasting marriage is to strive after holiness; individually and together as a couple and also as a family. Christian marriage is a calling to death and self emptying—something that will only be accomplished by the grace of God. The real crisis of marriage is that Christians do not understand the degree of daily self-sacrifice that is required of them when they are married. There is no escaping the cross if you want to be a Christian, and Christian marriage has many crosses.”

If you cannot be a first-class saint like St. Anthony, do not shrug your shoulders and say: “Nothing can come of me!” Increase your efforts and double your talent. In My Father’s house are many mansions , said the Lord (John 14:2). If you merit to settle in the least of these dwelling places, you will be more glorious and more fortunate than all of the rulers who have ever existed on earth. To each according to his own talent. You will not be a St. Anthony, but neither will St. Anthony, alone, occupy the Kingdom of God. - Saint Nikolai Velimirovich

Abortion is Legalized Genocide
“Where are those hypocritical defenders of human rights? Unborn but living children don’t even have the same rights as cats and dogs? And all this is presented as progress?
A society with injustice and inhumanity at its foundation will deteriorate.
The most loathsome perversion is to consider virtue foolishness, to laugh at integrity, to fight against the true natural order, and to call perversion an alternative way of life.
We should tell our children that they will never be happy if they have the blood of the innocent on their hands.
We belittle the value of human life by our own actions.
Who gave us the right to call ourselves progressive and civilized, condemning those who kill children with weapons, when we ourselves kill our own children?
Perhaps many will consider my words harsh and provocative. Indeed, this is what I wanted: It is a provocation to the hardness of heart of all those responsible for the modern genocide of abortion.
I want to protect the children who cry unceasingly, because they have no eyes to see or a mouth to smile. They were destroyed by doctors at the request of their own parents."

"Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews,
but because out of a hope for restored patriotism,
or a sense of economic anxiety,
or a hope to preserve their religious values,
or dislike of their opponents,
or raw political opportunism,
or convenience,
or ignorance,
or greed.

That word is 'Nazi.'"

I might express it somewhat abruptly by saying that most Americans are born drunk; and really require a little wine or beer to sober them.  They have a sort of permanent intoxication from within; a sort of invisible champagne which needs to be weighted and soothed and supplemented by something corresponding to the glass of port with which the English were accustomed to conclude and settle their dinner.  Americans do not need drink to inspire them to do anything; though they do sometimes, I think, need a little for the deeper and more delicate purpose of teaching them how to do nothing.

An Englishman watching an American is sometimes tempted to wonder, almost wildly, what he would be like if he were drunk, when he is like this even when he is sober; and there may be, I admit, concealed in this consideration something like a psychological excuse for Prohibition.  For if the American did drink (and it may be hinted that Americans sometimes do) I fear he would not be drinking port or strong ale or any of these solid drinks; but only whisky, which would have the fearful effect of making him even more enterprising than before.  Nevertheless, although an Englishman cannot help feeling this faint wonder at the sight of such auto-intoxicated activity, he will, if he is wise, recognize that it is connected with a real virtue, compared with which mere abstinence from alcohol might almost be called a vice.

I have already remarked that all Americans are Puritans, excepting those that are Catholics, but not excepting those that are atheists or anarchists or, more dangerous still, artists.  The Pagans are Puritans; the enemies of Puritanism are Puritans; they prove it by the way in which they identify the last fads of Puritanism with the first principles of Christianity.  The very fact that they think they can defy religion by drinking and smoking shows precisely what is the only religion they have ever found to defy.
