It would have been easy to mistake what was happening in a hotel ballroom here for a religious service. All the things that might be associated with one were present Sunday: 80 people drawn by a common conviction. Exhortations to service. Singing and light swaying. An impassioned sermon.

There was just no mention of God.

Hang about! Some atheists want to get together, socialize with like-minded people, form a community in which they can support one another, find an organized way to combine resources so as to help their neighbors, etc.? That's really, really strange. It's almost like they're human or something. Next thing you know these atheists will be having weddings and funerals.  Cool

Right.  This has absolutely nothing to do with mockery.

They have gone from mocking religion to copying religion. I'm sure you'll soon see divisions, denominations, based on the way in which you don't believe - militant, indifferent, sympathetic. I think it signals a possible reversal, rather than solidification, of previous trends.

Do they have Holy icons of Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche, David Hume and last but not least, St. Christopher Hitchens the New Godless Theologian?

I met this guy once when he was still a Pentecostal and not the media darling for the new-new-athiesm. He was fairly unremarkable, like the typical preacher you would expect from Deridder.

It's weird how much celebrity he has been able to garner for being an apostate, like that's original.

Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.
