The African Orthodox Church (of America) practices the Western rite catechism. Or does it have it's own catechism and it not really Orthodox at all?
There are a couple of groups who go by this name, all tracing their roots back to the same start. The largest is The African Orthodox Church Inc., like many vagante groups that calls themselves Orthodox, link their Apostolic Succession to the Syriacs in the 1800's. This group in particular was an offshoot of the Episcopalians, and that is what the still most resemble.
I had some nice dialogues with some of them during the 90's, but they have many obstacles to overcome that they do not wish to overcome in order to be part of the The Orthodox Church. They did not want to change what they were currently doing at the time, they did not want to give up their female clergy, and they wanted to remain segregated.
Some parishes practice a sudo Byzantine practice, and other something akin to the Western Rite.
None of the groups who use "African Orthodox" are in communion with either the Chalcedonian or Non-Chalcedonian Orthodox Churches, no matter what they may claim.
