Anchorites or other monastics in pre-schism Scandinavia?
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:35:23 AM »
Anyone who knows anything about this?
Is there any evidence of such activity anywhere in Scandinavia prior to the Great Schism?
Since the Vikings entertained close relations with Russians and many earls, kings and other warriors served with the Varangian guard, it seems strange that Orthodox monastics never settled anywhere.
All I can find on monasticism in Scandinavia is about Roman-Catholic orders.

IIRC Sts. Ansgar, Sigrid and Rimbert were missionary monks. Also, you might be interested in this list of Scandinavian Saints. Some of them were monastics.

Russia only converted in 988.

Russia only converted in 988.

Orthodoxy arrived to Scandinavia earlier than that. St. Ansgar died in 865.

St. Tryphon evangelized the Sami, centuries after the Great Schism, building the St. George Chapel in Neiden, Norway in 1565
