A good book on the Liturgy
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:35:59 AM »
Does anyone know of a good book which explains everything about the liturgy in detail? Thanks.

Looks like I'll need a new bookcase. Thanks.

Which one would you recommend?

Knowing your level of detailing, I'd go for links 1, 3, or 4. ;D

Thanks! The one with the Greek text on the one side and the English translation on the other does sound interesting. I ordered number 3.

This is the reference book commenting the Orthodox Liturgy:

http://www.denver.goarch.org/liturgical/articles/pm/pm-12.pdf
http://books.google.fr/books/about/A_Commentary_on_the_Divine_Liturgy.html?id=TV2maSGvcnkC&redir_esc=y

”Nicholas Cabasilas' Commentary on the Divine Liturgy is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. The work has long been essential reading for specialists in the fields of comparative liturgy and history of liturgy, since Cabasilas comments in detail on the Byzantine rite of his day and is able to draw comparisons with the Roman liturgy as well. The work is also invaluable for all those who wish to understand more about the theory and practice of worship in the Orthodox Church.”

Does anyone know of a good book which explains everything about the liturgy in detail? Thanks.

What exactly are you looking for?  Liturgy meaning the Eucharistic Liturgy or the entire Rite?  And in terms of explanations, do you mean history of development, "rubrics", theology, etc.?  I could make some recommendations that haven't yet been made, but it helps to narrow it down.

An explanation of the "rubrics" of the Eucharistic Liturgy would be nice.

The Spirit of the Liturgy by pope Benedict XVI  :police:
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

"Living the Liturgy," by Fr. Stanley Harakas. In English. Simple details, and reminds us how to participate in every section of the service. This is one my priest asked me to read for the catechumenate.

Of the few I've read, I'd rank them like this according to how good I thought they were and how useful I'd imagine they'd be in this case...

Fr. Lawrence Farley - Let Us Attend: A Journey through the Orthodox Divine Liturgy
St. Nicholas Cabasilas - Commentary on the Divine Liturgy
St. Germanus I of Constantinople - On the Divine Liturgy
Archbp. Lazar Puhalo - Understanding the Divine Liturgy (Scripture in the Liturgy)

Robert Taft is probably the go-to guy when it comes to the Byzantine rite.

I liked The Heavenly Banquet: Understanding the Divine Liturgy by Fr. Emmanuel Hatzidakis, which Arachne already gave a link to.

An explanation of the "rubrics" of the Eucharistic Liturgy would be nice.

Well, I don't own a copy of Hatzidakis, but that seemed to be pretty good when I looked through it.  Another one I'd check out is The Divine Liturgy: A Commentary in the Light of the Fathers by Hieromonk Gregorios: http://www.amazon.com/The-Divine-Liturgy-Commentary-Fathers/dp/0981731767

I own a copy, and it's a great book for the price...haven't read it cover to cover, but I think you'd like it.

I don't know that much about most of the other books referenced here, so I'll let others speak for them.  Definitely read Germanos' and Cabasilas' commentaries anyway.  But for something traditional but with the modern "incarnation" of the Liturgy, those are my recommendations.
