Hi everybody,

Last night one of my future husband's good friend decided to take his own life. He did it in a very aggressive way and we are all in shock.
He was in the middle of separating from his wife with whom he had a young son.
He also had another son from a previous relationship.
He wasn't Orthodox. I don't even know if he was a believer at all.
I just feel so sad and helpless.

All I can do is pray for his soul and ask God to have mercy on him.
I don't even know if we're supposed to pray for suicidal people?? Is there a specific prayer I can use? Can we light a candle for him tomorrow? Can we mention him to our priest?

So sad...........

Pray anyway.  If it does not help him, it will at least help you.  And who knows what was in his mind in the end.  We are not to judge.

I would be happy to agree with you, but then both of us would be wrong.

May God have mercy on the person's soul!

In my Orthodox prayer book* there is a specific prayer for suicidal people, it is written by st.Leo of Optina (+1841):

Lord, search for the perished soul of (the name of the person) and if it is possible, have mercy on it. Unexplored are your destinies, o God! Do not take to me as a sin this prayer! Let Thy Holy Will be done o Lord!

*my prayer book is not in English, the translation is mine, i hope i translated it correctly.

While he cannot be prayed for by name in church by the priest, except in the canon to St. Warus for the departed--the holy martyr is known to intercede for the non-Orthodox departed and suicides, do pray for him at home, light candles, and do good works in his memory. Remember the good in him and do good from that. When we pray and act from love and pain of heart, we give God an excuse to act, Elder Paisios said, even where otherwise He would respect the free will of the person for whom we pray and act. God is moved by compassion. God wants to save everyone.

Lord have mercy!  Lord please have understanding for this man, take away his pain, and bring him into your loving kingdom.  Lord your mercy is infinite, your love without comparison, if it is your will, have mercy on the reposed.

God bless this family in their time of need.

(We have gone through a family suicide before, with a gunshot involved.   It was horrible, and his age was 29.  There are many questions that go unanswered, and many people blame themselves some.   Just remember that God loves you.... God is good.  My heart goes out to you & your future husband - and the man's family & loved ones)
