Priests puts it into the chalice, gets some Eucharist and gives to the people. |

Theology of spoon   a) it's just safer to distribute than drinking from the chalice directly b) priest can controll the amount given so than it will be enough for everyone |

In the Early Church everyone received the Eucharist in their hands and by sipping from the chalice. Considering that these elements are holy, the Church was concerned that the elements could accidentally be dropped on the floor or spilt. By the ninth century, they were mixed and Priests carefully placing them into the mouths of the communicants with a spoon.

not all orthodox churches mix the elements. Just to clarify: He is referring to the Oriental "Miaphysites". In that communion there are certain churches which don't do this as they have various rites between national churches. In "Byzantine/Imperial" Orthodoxy, the praxis is uniform and uses a spoon, also called the "tongs" in reference to Isaiah's coal on the lips, I think. |
