I have started this thread as a spin-off from the "First Monastery in Paraguay", with photos and info about Orthodox monasteries in South America. These are the ones I found so far.

As a curiosity, Penedo is a town created by Finnish settlers. Toivo Uuskallio claimed that while still in Finland he received an ever strong calling to go to the south and start a colony where people would live more "naturally" and in greater harmony, following a vegetarian diet, that included abstinance from alcohol, coffee and tea. In 1927, he arrived in Brazil with his wife and three friends, knowing noone and little about the country. Eventually, they found their way to the farm of the St. Benedict Roman Monastery near the current location of Penedo and his group worked there for 2 years, learning about local farming and culture. In 1928 he returned to Finland with knowledge and information to convince others to return to Penedo with him to create a village, where they could live their ideals. He published a book called "Matkalla Kohti Tropiikin Taikaa" (Trip in Direction to the Magic of the Tropics). His book was succesful in gaining some support for the project and in 1929 they returned with 122 settlers. Others would still come in the next decade and there were about 300 settlers by the 40s. Today, it is a touristic town, searched for its colder mountain weather and the Finnish architecture, museum and "Santa's Summer House".
