I thought this may be fun.  Although in the RCC, Popes may theoretically be chosen from any given country, and they have the given name from their parents, they take a different name as a consequence of office. It's usually that of a well-known saint, such as an Apostle. Pick one of the above, if you think that's the one they'll use - or tell us if you think they'll come out of left field with something like Ethelburg.  Here goes!  |

I'm definitely for Theodore. However, he would be Theodore III  And this name was used only by Orthodox Roman popes... Or Carl Benedict (Carl after the secular name of John Paul II) you see, John Paul Benedict is too long, and Carl Benedict sounds very nice (I think it's a good name for a politician). Indeed, it's interesting. I only understand the case of "Peter". Maybe some people would think he's an usurper? Or too much requiring? I can't put my thoughts in proper words. How about a Pope Augustine or a Cyrill? (These would suit an African Pope best.)
Cyrill probably not because of Russian patriarch - I know a lot of people who associate this name with Russian and something bad But Augustine is very good idea, I think |

I don't think we should take St. Malachy's "Petrus Romanus" any more literally than we take any of the other epithets he used to discribe other Popes. Perhaps this epithet refers to a Pope who willl restore the papacy to somewhat the dimensions it had when the Pentarchy first emerged.
