God preserve us from "the modern hip Catholic church"!

The choices given in the poll left out (at least) one important option: "don't know".  (It wouldn't surprise me know if someone came along and suggested "Pope Don't Know I"  ::).)

Wow!  I have never encountered that name.

At first, I thought you were making a joke.

Can you imagine naming your little boy Pambo?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pambo

Pambo was a disciple of Saint Anthony the Great. He lived in the Nitrian Desert where he founded many monasteries.[4] He was renowned for his wisdom, and was consulted by many, including Saint Athanasius, Saint Melania the Elder, and Saint Rufinus. He was also the spiritual father of many saints, including Saint Pishoy and Saint John the Dwarf.
A founder of the Nitrian Desert monastery in Egypt and a famed disciple of St. Anthony. Having served and studied under Anthony in his youth, Pambo later became a pioneer in establishing the eremitical life in the Nitrian Desert and was much respected for his wisdom. According to tradition, he was regularly visited by some of the most powerful and prominent figures of the time, including Sts. Athanasius, Melania the Elder, and Rufinus. St. Melania was with him when he died.

As a youngster Saint Pambo once asked Saint Anthony "My Father, teach me to live well." To which the great Saint Anthony answered "My son, to live well, one must have a great distrust of oneself, with every effort watch over one's heart and mind, and in all things seek God alone."
Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.

When I heard that name all I can hear, in my mind, is circus/clown music...tee hee  No laughing matter is that he was a great saint of both the East and the West.

How is Peter not on this list?

That was actually one of the reasons, a thousandish years ago, that the name-changing custom got started.

The chief reason was that Pope John I was named Mercury, and didn't want to have the name of a pagan god attached to the Papal line.  This has never bothered hierarchs in the East; a recent Patriarch of Ethiopia was Abuna Merkorios.

Curiously there are some out there who would claim that this came from St. Peter himself when Jesus changed his name from Simon to Peter when he was made the first Pope of the Church.
