I thought this may be fun. Although in the RCC, Popes may theoretically be chosen from any given country, and they have the given name from their parents, they take a different name as a consequence of office. It's usually that of a well-known saint, such as an Apostle. Pick one of the above, if you think that's the one they'll use - or tell us if you think they'll come out of left field with something like Ethelburg. Here goes!

No one wants to be Pope Peter II. There are apocalyptic prophecies associated with his reign.

Interestingly, most Popes have had Latin or Greek names. Few picked Hebrew or Biblical ones - other than Paul and John. No Pope Peter, Andrew, Bartholomew, Philip, Luke or Matthew, no James or Judah. Also, they always get to choose their own name (unlike St. Peter the Apostle).
How about a Pope Augustine or a Cyrill? (These would suit an African Pope best.)

I'm definitely for Theodore. However, he would be Theodore III And this name was used only by Orthodox Roman popes... Or Carl Benedict (Carl after the secular name of John Paul II) you see, John Paul Benedict is too long, and Carl Benedict sounds very nice (I think it's a good name for a politician).
Indeed, it's interesting. I only understand the case of "Peter". Maybe some people would think he's an usurper? Or too much requiring? I can't put my thoughts in proper words. How about a Pope Augustine or a Cyrill? (These would suit an African Pope best.)
Cyrill probably not because of Russian patriarch - I know a lot of people who associate this name with Russian and something bad But Augustine is very good idea, I think

If you really want to scare some sedevacantists, have someone with the given name of Peter, take the name Sixtus VI (who would incidentally be the sixth pope after Pius XII).

I don't think we should take St. Malachy's "Petrus Romanus" any more literally than we take any of the other epithets he used to discribe other Popes. Perhaps this epithet refers to a Pope who willl restore the papacy to somewhat the dimensions it had when the Pentarchy first emerged.

If an African bishop is picked, perhaps he will be Augustine the First as the ancient see of Hippo is located on the African continent in modern Algeria.

God preserve us from "the modern hip Catholic church"! The choices given in the poll left out (at least) one important option: "don't know". (It wouldn't surprise me know if someone came along and suggested "Pope Don't Know I" .)

Wow! I have never encountered that name. At first, I thought you were making a joke. Can you imagine naming your little boy Pambo? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PamboPambo was a disciple of Saint Anthony the Great. He lived in the Nitrian Desert where he founded many monasteries.[4] He was renowned for his wisdom, and was consulted by many, including Saint Athanasius, Saint Melania the Elder, and Saint Rufinus. He was also the spiritual father of many saints, including Saint Pishoy and Saint John the Dwarf. A founder of the Nitrian Desert monastery in Egypt and a famed disciple of St. Anthony. Having served and studied under Anthony in his youth, Pambo later became a pioneer in establishing the eremitical life in the Nitrian Desert and was much respected for his wisdom. According to tradition, he was regularly visited by some of the most powerful and prominent figures of the time, including Sts. Athanasius, Melania the Elder, and Rufinus. St. Melania was with him when he died. As a youngster Saint Pambo once asked Saint Anthony "My Father, teach me to live well." To which the great Saint Anthony answered "My son, to live well, one must have a great distrust of oneself, with every effort watch over one's heart and mind, and in all things seek God alone."

As a youngster Saint Pambo once asked Saint Anthony "My Father, teach me to live well." To which the great Saint Anthony answered "My son, to live well, one must have a great distrust of oneself, with every effort watch over one's heart and mind, and in all things seek God alone." When I heard that name all I can hear, in my mind, is circus/clown music...tee hee No laughing matter is that he was a great saint of both the East and the West.

How is Peter not on this list?
That was actually one of the reasons, a thousandish years ago, that the name-changing custom got started.

The chief reason was that Pope John I was named Mercury, and didn't want to have the name of a pagan god attached to the Papal line. This has never bothered hierarchs in the East; a recent Patriarch of Ethiopia was Abuna Merkorios.

Curiously there are some out there who would claim that this came from St. Peter himself when Jesus changed his name from Simon to Peter when he was made the first Pope of the Church.
