According to the Rachel Ray Show on Friday, February 15, 2013, Dr. Travis said the FDA allows up to 20 maggots in processed mushroom soup. http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/videos/view/43/5892/Of course, Rachel Ray gagged and shook her head at the thought. What other crawling creepers are allowed in processed foods in U.S. grocery stores by the FDA? |

In Egypt and in the Middle East, humans enjoy a delicacy consisting of chocolate-covered swollen ant abdomens filled with honey. These ants are called repletes, and are living storehouses of nutrients for other ants. My dad purchased these and another delicacy, chocolate-covered grubs similar to June Beetle grubs. They were delicious. Yes, I ate several. |

Anyone for some Kentucky Fried Cockroach? Ah, that reminds me. I went to a Family Life Conference many years ago, and sitting across me at brunch was a priest. I was talking to my husband, was ravenously hungry, and did not look at the food as I shoveled it into my mouth. Big mistake. As I bit into some stirred fried veggies, my tongue detected something long, skinny and sharp, and I quickly determined that it was cockroach. Putting my napkin over my face so as not to disturb the other guests, I quickly pulled it out of my mouth, which was no easy task as it was two inches long, and then I quickly went over to the banquet buffet, noticed some more cooked cockroaches (one to two inches long), and pointed them out to the waiter. The priest was impressed at my calmness, as he saw me put the beastie into my mouth, and wondered how I would handle it. He could not say anything to warn me because his mouth was full at that time. Father said that had another parishioner bitten into that cockroach, they would most likely have screamed. However, I did receive an A in entomology in college. The restaurant offered me a free breakfast, but I declined. I lost my appetite for two weeks, but also lost 12 stubborn pounds.  |

Eh, not really. People eat nasty things like that all over the world and they are just fine. I think it is more of a psychological issue than anything else; the thought of eating insects or maggots/larvae is scary to us. But I bet that if we gave it a chance and did not know what we were eating, many of us would actually think it tasted pretty good. I'd rather just not know what I am eating, to avoid this awkwardness.

He was always seeing if he could make me nauseated so that he could get an extra piece of pie ... mine. Anyway, that was a horrible video. And yes, the FDA does allow 20 maggots per can of mushroom soup. I am certainly not going to buy canned mushroom soup anytime soon. Homemade soup is much better by far! |

I remember only my own homemade soups with some bugs floating. I use a special vegetable wash to wash all critters from my veggies. It seems to work fine. In the rinse water, I may see some critters, which are dumped outside, but I have never seen insects floating in my soup. On the other hand, brussel sprouts are known for harboring aphids, which burrow into the center. Washing the brussel sprouts does not dislodge them. Thus, I usually cut those veggies in half to check for aphids. Once I found at least four to five aphids per head or more, so I returned them to the store. The aphids had eaten most of the insides and left a mess of fecal matter. It was disgusting. |

A replete is a word used in entomology to describe the worker ant that stores honey in its abdomen for the hive to use. People harvest these repletes by detaching the abdomen from the ant, and then dipping it into chocolate. It tastes much like a honey filled rice crispy. They are delicious and sweet. Funny, the former king of Saudi Arabic gifted these delicacies to my dad when he visited that country as part of a scientific delegation from the USA. The boxes of chocolate were inscribed in Arabic. |

A metabolic change occurs when conditions are ripe which triggers simple grasshoppers to change into large locusts which can form into huge clouds and migrate causing much damage to agricultural crops.
It is said that St. John the Forerunner fasted on honey and locusts.
However, some guy here on OC.net said that it was not really locusts but the locust tree fruit.
What do the Church Fathers have to say?
Did St. John eat the grasshoppers known as locusts?

People are missing the obvious issue here. Does this break the Lenten fast? Of course not, insects are invertebrates, and thus very edible items for Great Lent. Snails are also invertebrates as are shrimp (insects of the sea). |
