The Problem with Shari'ah: being implemented too fast
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:13:17 PM »
Quote
Droukdel, the emir of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, perhaps surprisingly argues that his fighters moved too fast and too brutally in applying the Islamic law known as Shariah to northern Mali. Comparing the relationship of Al Qaeda to Mali as that of an adult to an infant, he urges them to be more gentle, like a parent:

IOW don't kill the infidels and beat the women right away. That comes later.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Is this the true Islamic pragmatism and gentleness that the Muslims I've known have always tried to convince me is normative in their religion? Forgive me for being underwhelmed... :-\

Drat. Mali used to be a place where Islam was at its most moderate and tolerant. :-[

So was Somalia, believe it or not. 1960s Mogadishu was actually a very hip, peaceful place to be. Oh well.
