Pope Francis scolds nuns for not answering his phone call
« on: January 04, 2014, 04:46:52 PM »
Per KIXI Radio in Seattle, Pope Francis called some nuns on the phone to wish them a Happy New Year. He got their answering machine. He left a message asking where the nuns were.

It wasn't scolding at all. It was just a comment he made. He said "I wonder what makes nuns so busy, so they cannot answer a phone call?" I don't think that's scolding, it's just a comment.  ::)

Just like any self respecting human it's safe to assume they were in an advanced state of ebriety close to midnight on New Year's Eve .

I heard the NBC news broadcast. The commentator read it like it was a scolding.

Probably.  My Spanish isn't the best, but based on his tone of voice, it seemed like he was joking around with them.

If the pope calls a convent on new years eve or whatever he most likely knows them and is friends with them. So I guess he's not allowed to have friends and joke with them.  We leave voicemails like that all the time between friends.

What are the nuns doing that they do not answer? I am Pope Francis. I wish to greet you on this New Year's Eve. I see that it is very late that I have called you. May God bless you.

Yes, without the twinkle in the Pope's eyes, his voice, and his smile, one would not know from just reading the script.

If the Pope is infallible, shouldn't he have known the nuns would not have answered the phone? ::)

"veré si más tarde las puedo llamar" is "I'll see if I can call you later" (i.e., I'll try you again to see if you'll pick up, since I missed you right now)...for their own sake, I hope someone will pick it up then! :) Wouldn't want Sister Mary of the Phone to be put on habit-cleaning duty for the next month!

(And, yes, there's no real scolding going on here. It's pretty clearly a light-hearted ribbing. Pope Francis' accent is pretty funny, too. :))

Infallible means he is never wrong. And no, he was not wrong for calling the nuns and not knowing they wouldn't answer, the nuns were wrong for not having some one answer the phone for "da freakin Pope."  :police:

Also, he may be infallible (doubtful) but he never made claims to omniscience.
