If hesychia sells, then why not? In regards to 'death to the World". They are so corny they are hilarious. Although I doubt they mean that.

It is an actual Orthodox ministry run by the St Herman of Alaska Brotherhood of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
http://deathtotheworld.com/
Aren't they a group of former punk rockers too?

Death to the World was started by monks and nuns from the St Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, California, as a medium of evangelism to teens involved in the punk subculture by monastics who were ex-punks. A founding member was Justin Marler who, soon after recording Volume One with seminal doom metal band Sleep in 1991, left for seven years of monastic life while Sleep went on to become metal icons.

Originally, the monastics planned to submit an article about Fr. Seraphim Rose to the magazine Maximum RocknRoll. They later decided to try to place an ad for their monastery, but were only rudely rejected, being told that the magazine "only [ran] ads for music and zines". This inspired them to begin a zine.

The first issue was printed in the December of ’94 featuring a monk holding a skull on cover. The hand-drawn bold letters across the top read “DEATH TO THE WORLD, The Last True Rebellion” and the back cover held the caption: “they hated me without a cause.” ... The first issue, decorated with ancient icons and lives of martyrs inside, was advertised in Maximum RocknRoll and brought letters from all around the world.

I dread the day when the Coptic Orthodox Church becomes hip enough to engage in something that silly. I mean, I guess there are already Pope Shenouda III memorial t-shirts, but at least he isn't presented as a hip, counter-cultural figure.

The trouble with marketing your faith within a narrowly-defined, mostly youth-oriented subculture is that youth generally grow up and leave (and people who aren't youth anymore usually don't respond to such things). I'm glad I just have a closet full of old records gathering dust rather than a closet full of...God stuff.

I would think that Orthodoxy would be the last thing in the world that would need a gimmick or a hook, but what do I know. If the t-shirts get the kids interested, then...good?  Undecided

The new populist Bible?

Quote from: The Gospel According to our Teacher St. Ioannis Lydonis
And His disciples came unto Him, despairing of the oppression at the hands of the Romans. And He said to them, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. I'm totally counterculture, and I mean it, maaaaaaaaaaan."

There are some Hyperdox Hermans who actually buy this stuff; don't be surprised. Whatever can be marketed on the face of a coffee mug or T-shirt will in fact be marketed on the face of a coffee mug or T-shirt if there is a market of buyers to exploit; in this case, the Hyperdox Herman converts to Orthodoxy. I know because I ordered an Orthodox iPhone case when I first converted, but the order messed up, took my money and I never got the case. I actually heard an audio documentary on this story about the Avon woman who did this, like 15 years ago, and I still couldn't understand why someone would have to use a canoe to access amazon.com when reading this.

I thought perhaps canoe was the new mobile device.

If the costume designer was in any way Orthodox, he oughta be locked in a room full of babushki. They'd soon sort him out.

The designer is neither Orthodox nor Russian, as far as I've been able to gather.

Chotki, whether as a rope, or as a bracelet, should never be a "fashion accessory". Ideally, they should be worn under one's clothing, unless one is a monastic or a bishop. Even for them, their prayer ropes are usually looped around their belt, and are barely visible against the black of their robes.

Though a few of the babushki and yiayies I know wouldn't need sticks. Their words and their fearlessness are their weapons. I've seen them reduce six-foot-three galoots to a quivering, teary mess just through their sheer force of moral integrity.
