Good morning, OC.net!

In order to facilitate a better understanding of our general approach to moderating the forum - and, more specifically, how we decide what topics and types of discussions are appropriate for each section - the staff of OC.net have decided to publish this document which was before now an internal memo on the subject.  It provides guidance to the Section Moderators and Global Moderators to assist them in their tasks; ultimately, discernment and implementation is left up to the individual moderators.

General Guidelines for the Various Boards

The following are general guidelines to be followed when moderating in the various boards.  If you have a question about application, you should ask that section's moderator, the global mod in charge of that section, or Fr. George.

When used in this document:
Discussion: Fairly simple.  Talking about something.
Debate: Discussion including contesting the meaning or application of an argument, story, etc.
Light Polemics: Debate with pejorative language used toward an opposing POV, system of belief, or corporate entity.  No profanity or vulgarity.
Full Polemics: Light Polemics with pejorative language used toward opposing users or other individuals.  Strong language allowed to a point, as established by precedent and guidelines already published.
Inappropriate material: Discussions that do not belong in that section.

General Forums (i.e. Christian News, Board News, etc.): Discussion, no debates or polemics.  These are information-only sections, with relevant discussion of topics permitted.  Inappropriate material to be delegated appropriately (Faith, Liturgy, FFA:RT, etc.).

Prayer Forum: No discussion, debate, or polemics.  Only prayer and praise.  Inappropriate material to be delegated appropriately (Faith, Liturgy, FFA:RT, etc.).

Convert Issues: Discussion, no polemics or debate.  Only questions about our faith and relevant answers, and only from the Orthodox POV.  Other faiths can clarify misconceptions about their group, but no defense permitted, and no anti-Orthodox polemic.  Inappropriate material to be delegated appropriately (Faith, Liturgy, FFA:RT, etc.).

Faith Issues: Discussion and debate, no polemics.  Non-Orthodox can only clarify misconceptions about their group, but no defense permitted, and no anti-Orthodox polemic.  Inappropriate material to go to FFA:RT.

Orth-Other (Orth-Cath, Orth-Prot): Discussion, debate, light polemics.  Other Christian faiths can butt heads with the Orthodox here.  Ad hominems are not permitted.  Inappropriate material to go to Private Orth-Other.

Liturgy (and WR): Discussion and debate, no polemics.  Primarily for discussion of Orthodox Liturgy; other Christian worship to only be discussed as a point of comparison.  Non-Orthodox can only clarify misconceptions about their group, but no defense permitted, and no anti-Orthodox polemic.  Inappropriate material to go to FFA:RT.

Oriental Orthodox Discussion: Discussion and debate, no polemics.  For discussion of OO topics and POV, not for EO vs. OO.  Inappropriate material to go to Private EO/OO or FFA:RT.

Orthodox Family Forum: Discussion and debate, no polemics.  For Orthodox POV only; non-Orthodox can only clarify misconceptions about their group, but no defense permitted, and no anti-Orthodox polemic.  Inappropriate material to go to FFA:RT or NRT.

Other Topics: Discussion, light debate, no polemics.  For non-serious topics only.  Inappropriate material to be delegated appropriately  (Faith, Liturgy, FFA:RT, etc.).

Free-For-All (Religious and Non-Religious): Discussion, debate, light polemics.  Other faiths can butt heads with the Orthodox here.  Ad hominems are not permitted.  Inappropriate material to go to Private Fora (Politics, EO/OO, or Orth-Other).

Private Fora: Discussion, debate, full polemics.  Only material to be moderated is that which is beyond the outer limits of Christian decorum (i.e. inappropriate language as discussed in our language policy), and posts that may advocate or propagate illegal material (libel, treason, etc.).

The sentence: "Ad hominems are not permitted. " appears in only two of the guidelines.

What is the definition of an ad hominem according to OC.net?

Are ad hominems permitted only in the Private Fora only? Or by omission, are they permitted elsewhere too?

In  these guidelines, only in two of these forums is the sentence: Ad hominems are not permitted.

What is the definition of an ad hominem according to OC.net?
Personal attack or insult

Are ad hominems permitted only in the Private Fora only? Or by omission, are they permitted elsewhere too?
Personal attacks are permitted only on the Private Forum. They are not permitted anywhere else. FULL STOP! (The reason we don't say this explicitly for any public boards outside of the Free-For-All boards is that personal attacks are intrinsically a part of the definition of polemics. Anywhere that polemics are forbidden, personal attacks are forbidden. We need to state explicitly that ad hominems (personal attacks) are not permitted on the Free-For-All and Orthodox-Other Christian boards simply because we state that light polemics are permitted there, which requires some definition of what we permit and what we don't permit in our definition of light polemics.)
