The hat is a custom-made replica of the hat depicted in Holbein’s famous portrait of St. Thomas More. It was a gift from the St. Thomas More Society of Richmond, Virginia.

Was Scalia, a Catholic who often speaks about his how faith frames his worldview, subtly stating his defiance of political authority, making an argument about religious freedom today, or was his head just really cold?

Totally out of Thomas More's and Justice Scalia's league, the lot of them. (Not like S. is in risk of losing his hat head - his seat, at the most.)

Except he cannot lose his seat. He serves until he retires, dies, or AFAIK is censured and removed by the Supreme Court. Is that not so?

Which would, as a matter of course, be completely accidental.

Notice the similarity of this cap with those worn by Greek Orthodox Priests?

When in-Justice Rehnquist, who decided in Ingraham v Wright that schools could beat students with thick wooden boards without even giving them a hearing like students must get before suspension, conducted Clinton's impeachment hearing he needlessly "invented" his own robe decorations, adding gold stripes:

Scalia's hat is rather benign, if not pleasant, in contrast.

Oh, wow.

Just wow.

What next?

Why did he not wear his doctorate robe and hat.
Some of those scholastic garbs can be very outlandish.
