This is awkward.....

Quote
Excerpt:

A priest in Springfield, IL has gotten himself tied up in quite a mess. Father Tom Donovan of the St. Aloysius church on Springfield's north end called 911 from the rectory when he found himself unable to undo a pair of handcuffs and a gag. "I'm going to need help getting out before this becomes a medical emergency," Donovan told a dispatcher during the Nov. 28 call.

When the dispatcher asks for more information, Donovan offered up this explanation: "(I was) playing with them and I need help getting out." Since the call, there has been no explanation for how Donovan was able to gag and cuff himself.

No words,

This is why he should have practiced with a pair of handcuffs that has an easily accessed release switch.

SPRINGFIELD — Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois released a statement regarding Father Thomas Donovan.
....
With Father Donovan’s consent to disclose private patient information, I wish to inform you that he is being treated by a clinical therapist and is receiving appropriate medical care.
....
[A]ccording to the clinical therapist, Father Donovan is suffering from a psychological condition that manifests itself in self-bondage as a response to stress.* The clinical therapist also confirms that the strict absence of illicit sexual behaviors, relationships, and patterns reveal that this self-bondage is to be understood as non-sexual in nature.
....
Although the psychological explanation of non-sexual self-bondage provides some context to what occurred, yet the details of this incident are understandably disturbing....

__ __ __
*Non-Sexual self-bondage as defined by clinical therapist: “Non-sexual self-bondage is a not well-researched phenomenon in which a person administers some form of physical self-restraint for the purpose of reducing stress or tension build-up but without sexual arousal....

This is something we all do to one degree or another. When nervous, people "hug" themselves", "sit" on their hands, etc. Physical restriction has shown to be calming and helpful for some people suffering from autism. And it has been shown that the compression on the body by a wetsuit causes an overall change in many vitals signs which would suggest an increase in relaxation.

This is just a disordering form of a quite common way of calming one's self.

Temple Grandin physically restrained herself (in a self-built contraption) during college as a way to remain calm.

Oh, I thought that "bounds and gags" came from the text of a news article. And I figured it was symptomatic of all the typos and grammar mistakes one sees in online news articles, incl. the New York Times', these days.

I did not intend to diss any member here. This is a different kind of medium, where strict precision is not expected or required.

Please forgive me. My sin.

heart breaking really, the fact that he did not have someone who if not totally understanding is at least discreet enough to call for this.  a friend who unties him and offers him a nice cup of tea or whatever the  man likes and says ' if you need me again call me'

in a case such as this ,having the option to call somebody and when all you can think of is 911, heart breaking.

God be with him.
