Welcome to Shroro - The Syriac Orthodox Christian Digest

By the grace of God, the first issue of 'Shroro - The Syriac Orthodox Christian Digest' http://www.socdigest.org is ready for its readers.

In the Syriac Aramaic language, Shroro means, "The Truth." Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God, is the Truth (Shroro) that we all aspire to emulate. He alone is the great inspiration for this project.

This project was initiated by SOCM-FORUM a Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOCM-FORUM ) and it was a collective and successful effort of our faithful from different parts of the world. The mission of the team behind "Shroro," is to praise HIM and to uphold the true faith of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, handed over to us by our forefathers, as well as to make a platform for all Syriac Orthodox Christians around the world to
disperse the news and events of the Church. Our vision is to take 'Shroro' to new heights and be the premier magazine of its kind on internet.

I am fully aware that the e-magazine 'Shroro' is presently in its infancy and its further development and success will be entirely dependent on your right feed back and encouragement. Hence I request all of you to give us your valuable comments about the e-magazine.

Kindly receive it, and remember us in your prayers.

Thomas,

Very interesting.  Thank you.

Can you tell me anything of the history of the icon of Saint Severious that appears with the article?

Many years,

The author is supporting his throughts based on the works of Pope Leo of Rome.  It was in the council of Chalcedon that Pope Leo established his supremacy.  Neither Pope Leo nor this council is accepted by any OO.  I do not know why the Jacobite church is allowing this idea to creep in to OO.  From OO perspective there is only one important feast for St. Peter, i,.e. the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul during the fast of the Apostles.  The article is a clear indication of heavy RC influence in the Jacobite Church.

A throne is understood only in the context of priesthood or succession.  Thus we believe a Bishop is 'enthroned'.  So, each bishop is having a throne. Each Apostles had a throne.  It is not understood as a physical chair.

Pope Leo of Rome certainly was not correct in his Christology, but he is a widely venerated saint among the EO. As HH of Syriac Orthodox Church outlined in the agreement with the EO, we should study one another's history and saints."

I don't usually comment on things like this, but I must say I do not approve of this quoting of Leo of Rome to establish teaching in an Oriental Orthodox Church. From the above mentioned website:

"The bishops similarly kept the anniversary of their consecration, as appears from four sermons of Pope Leo of Rome on the anniversary of his accession to the pontifical dignity.  These commemorations were frequently continued by the people after their bishops’ decease, out of respect for their memory. The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter was instituted from very early times. Leo says we should celebrate the Chair of Saint Peter with no less joy than the day of his martyrdom, for as in the latter he was exalted to a throne of glory in heaven, by the former he was installed Head of the Church on earth."

Perhaps, as His Holiness the Patriarch of Antioch has said, we should study one another's saints, but does that mean that we should build the teachings of our Church upon their statements?  Personally, I find Pope Leo's ecclesiology as off-base as his christology.  All of the Apostles are equal.  St. Peter is not greater than St. Mark or St. Thomas.  If I accepted the supremacy of the Petrine throne, I suppose I would be Roman Catholic.

The Monastery of St. Moses the Abyssinian

This is a magnificent story of a building that witnessed history and survived centuries. It is a building that has become a part of the history of early Christianity.

Dear friends and brethren,

The September 2005 edition of "Shroro - The Syriac Orthodox Christian Digest" is now online http://www.socdigest.org/

'Shroro' is dedicated its September issue to honour the supreme pontiff of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church. It is noteworthy that the Patriarch H.H.Ignatius Zakka I will be remembered in the history of the Church, as a reigning Patriarch completed 25 years in the recent history. The God Almighty given the Syriac Orthodox Church a magnanimous, visionary and yet very simple person as its Patriarch.
