I buy tickets for charity raffles (because my money, win or lose, goes to support good causes) and the traditional Greek New Year Eve special national lottery. That's about it. I got a kind of nudge several years ago that I was not meant to gamble, and took it seriously.

a $10 buy-in poker game with some good friends and good beers never hurt anyone...

Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God's mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved.

You'd be surprised how things you previously thought "never hurt anyone" turn out, according to the fathers, to be the source of all evil.

If you spend long enough on this forum, you'll come away with all sorts of weird, untrue ideas of Orthodox Christianity.

I would suggest most persons in general avoid any question beginning with why.
