I'm not too keen on the phrasing "that whole Christianity thing", but it could be an interesting movie - perhaps along the lines of Ben Hur, in the sense that Christ is present, but not on screen. Doing it that way would also deflect a lot of criticism about how Christ is played.

And avoid a lot of kitsch art generated using an actor's likeness.

Remember how those movies never showed the face of Jesus.

I was thinking in terms of certain more recent works (one from the 70s and the other from the mid-2000s) from which the actors’ likeness was lifted and used to sell many pieces of Jesus Junk in Christian markets. It's been years since I've seen Ben Hur.

Maybe I’m grumpy; maybe I’ve just seen too many passion plays.

I hope he'll be showing eating something all the time, like in Ocean's Eleven.

I consider Pontius Pilate to be one of the more tragic people in the Bible and have always had a deep sympathy for him.  Simultaneously, I think Brad Pitt is one of the sexiest men alive, and being primarily straight there aren't a lot of men I will say that about.

Still, I don't think that anyone will do a better Pilate than David Bowie did in that other awful film.

"What is truth?" Pitt-Pilate asks, while eating some Roman form of nachos. That would be both hilarious and sort of fittingly symbolic in some way I can't explain.

Which film was that? You said Bowie, and I thought of the unfortunate and bizaare Labrynth, then thought of Pontius Pilate like Bowie's character and shuddered.

Aww, that's a great movie. Strange, yes, but great (though it begins to drag towards the end).  angel

Hard to think of which is nastier--plastic cheese in nachos or garum.

The best Pontius Pilate was Telly Savalas in The Greatest Story Ever Told. The movie was a turkey, but Telly's part was a highlight. The best Herod beyond question was Frank Thring in King of Kings. His lecherous decadence ("Dance, Salome! DANCE!") cannot be bettered.

"King of Kings" is a favorite of mine. I do enjoy the lofty narration at the beginning.

Bowie looks good as a Roman, his speaking voice is suitably august, but he looks far too young and untried in this to make a convincing Procurator of Judea.

Hahaha who knows what they'll put into the movie

I don't know why, but I always have been imaging Pontius Pilate as a handsome man. A stately Roman in white toga with red strips... So Brad Pitt is quite good choice, but maybe 5 years later... He looks too young for this role. Probably it would be the same as with David Bowie
