Orthodox Christian

« on: January 02, 2013, 01:02:09 AM »

Hi All,

I'm looking for a Fasting Recipes Cookbook that I can use and follow in making fasting foods ?. I'm not looking for making fancy fasting recipes as I want to try and purify myself for God the best I can.

What book can help on fasting in an Orthodox Christian way?.

Thanks

I don't know about cookbooks but http://aggreen.net/food/recipes.html is a good website that I use because it has a lot of vegetarian recipes, but it also has many good non-vegetarian fasting foods as well (warning: some occasional hints of Ecumenism)

I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Greek-Monastery-Cookery-Archimandrite-Dositheos/dp/9608360366

The translation is a bit wonky in places, but the whole is more than understandable.

Al is a member here (though he visits rarely). Where do you get this "Ecumenism" stuff?

To Psalm 110

Try these:
Sacred Meals by John Finely
When You Fast:  Recipes for Lenten Seasons by Catherine Mandell

Also many Orthodox churches publish cookbooks as a fundraiser.  Check the internet and I bet some surface!

Good Lent to you!

I hope I do not get killed for this, but one of the best Internet sites that I have found that has vegetarian recipes is run by a Turkish woman who lives in the USA. http://almostturkish.blogspot.com/.

This blog obviously relies on olive oil but I think that we allowed that on Saturdays and Sundays during the second through sixth weeks.

I'd also recommend searching for Indian recipes (as long as you like that sort of thing) - they have loads of vegetarian food that is or can easily be adapted to be fast friendly. I've also recently found that there's a fair bit of Carribean food that's lenten, and as I have a really good greengrocer locally, full of both South Asian and Carribean produce, that's perfect.

Really my only actual fasting cookbook is one I picked up in Romania, but that's in Romanian and as far as I know has not been translated into English, otherwise I'd recommend that. Most of the time, though, I'd say that I cook my fasting food from standard cookbooks, just picking recipes carefully and adapting them where necessary. It's not so hard to do.

I finally ended up making my own, since I don't have a lot of time or interest in cooking, and my husband is vegetable-phobic. PM me if you would like me to email you a copy.
