Well, according to Scripture and St. Ephraim the Syrian who wrote a lovely poem on Paradise, Paradise is a place on earth that, after the flood (cataclysm) was not only hidden but made inaccessible, sort of like the land of the Valar (in the west across the sea) in Tolkein's Silmarillion.

The famous Navigatio of St. Brendan (Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbaitis) also comes to mind in that regard.
