(AFP) -- Two priests from the Coptic Orthodox Church in Sudan have been arrested after the religious conversion of a Muslim in the Islamist-run state, church sources said.

"I understand there was someone from the Arab origin that accepted Christ and was baptised by them," leading to their arrest within the past few days, one religious leader told AFP.

Lord have mercy! :(

Is there any reliable data how many Christians (I mean especially Copts) live there?

I am surprised that this happened in Sudan and not Egypt.  As they said, Lord have mercy.

There are missionary efforts underway in South Sudan organized by both the Coptic and Alexandrian Orthodox Churches, though I'm not sure what the status of the latter's work is given that the friend I thought was headed there to be a missionary bishop has been elected Bishop of Bujumbura instead.

Is the Ethiopian Church involved anywhere?

I would suggest most persons in general avoid any question beginning with why.

Wouldn't be surprised if the "converted Muslim" didn't even exist at all. This game of fake conversions goes back to the beginning, at least the 8th century when Saint Rodrigo's brother said he converted when he didn't, getting him killed for "apostasy" when he woke up and said he had never converted.
