MOSCOW -- Fans of two-time defending Russian champion Zenit St. Petersburg are calling for non-white and gay players to be excluded from the team.
Landscrona, the largest Zenit fan club, released a manifesto Monday demanding the club field an all-white, heterosexual team. It added that "dark-skinned players are all but forced down Zenit's throat now, which only brings out a negative reaction" and said gay players were "unworthy of our great city." http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1268282/zenit-st.-petersburg-fans-demanding-all-white,-non-gay-team?cc=5901

How are they defining "white"? Do you have to pass a tone test?

They have 4 priority levels: Priority area number 1. St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. Priority area number 2. North-West region and Central Russia. Priority area number 3. The rest of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, the Slavic countries, the Baltic States and Scandinavia. Priority area number 4. The rest of Europe. So if a person of, say, African descent, grew up in St. Petersburg or central Russia, they would be fine with that.

In explaining how soccer was not a worthwhile pursuit, St. Barsanuphius of Optina basically said you will know the reason why when you see its fruits. Perhaps everyone whould be placated if the offending players and Pussy Riot fought to the death.

It's bad enough that these Russian fans are so xenophobic and ignorant, so why not denigrate all of Russia while we are at it, eh? Sounds like good fun! In Christ, Andrew

Those ignorants are the majority. Would it be fair of me to judge all Belorussians based off my opinions of your postings on this board? Why can't we build up our brethren? Why must we tear them down with these remarks? In Christ, Andrew

In Christ, Andrew If his opinion was the same as that of the majority of Podlachian Bielorussians, then yes. Why can't we build up our brethren? Why must we tear them down with these remarks? Sometimes to build up, the first step is to tear down.

It's somewhere in the massive and wonderful tome that is his life, published by St. Herman Brotherhood Press.

St Petersburg's author Alexander Pushkin was 1/4 East African. Prince Abram Gannibal Major-General Abram Petrovich Gannibal, also Hannibal or Ganibal or Ibrahim Hannibal or Abram Petrov (Russian: Абра́м Петро́вич Ганниба́л; 1696 – 14 May[1] 1781, Suida, in present-day St. Petersburg), was an [enslaved] African brought to Russia as a gift for Peter the Great. He became major-general, military engineer, governor of Reval and nobleman of the Russian Empire. He is perhaps best known today as the great-grandfather of Alexander Pushkin
In 1704, after one year in Constantinople [ie Istanbul], Gannibal was ransomed and brought to the Russian capital by the deputy of the Russian ambassador Sava Vladislavich-Raguzinsky, on orders of his superiors. Emperor Peter the Great adopted Gannibal and raised him together with his own children. Gannibal was baptized in 1705, in St. Paraskeva Church in Vilnius, with Peter the Great as his godfather.

Racism is pretty much a Western import to Russia. In earlier centuries, there was lots of intermarriage with Native Siberians and Alaskans, as well as Finnic peoples, etc.

Surprisingly (?) Russia is the only one place it's so strong. Actually, racism was nonexistent until XVIII-XIX century. Religion-motivated persecutions were much more popular.
